A/N: Another drabble request from someone on Tumblr. The prompt was: "Tonks x Remus: Remus comes back."
Hope you like it!
Come Home
Remus had left with a purpose. He'd said he was going to see Harry; that he was going to offer help to the trio at Grimmauld Place.
But Tonks had an idea of what his 'help' might consist of.
Of course, she'd known since before they'd married that Remus thought himself inferior. As a boyfriend, as a husband: as a human. He'd made it quite clear that she should be going out with someone younger, healthier; whole.
But Dora Tonks didn't want any of that: she wanted Remus; for the brilliant, kind, compassionate, stupid man he was.
It'd taken her a while to get that through to him. Even in the early stages of their relationship he'd still been trying to convince her to break it off with him; to seek a younger man.
But gradually, Remus's insecurities diminished slightly: or at least, he didn't speak of them. And he'd even managed to surprise her with the proposal! Tonks had been delighted, of course; and had immediately agreed.
But now, Remus was worse than he'd ever been.
He hardly spoke since Tonks had told him of her pregnancy, and frankly she was getting rather sick of it.
He sat sullen and silent when they ate their dinner at night time, did his best to avoid her during the day; and didn't even visit Tonks's mother with her when she went anymore.
She didn't know what she'd been expecting; perhaps some kind of joy displayed at the thought of a new baby - a perfect little mixture of the two of them.
Tonks certainly was. Joyful, that is. She was so excited, and it was frustrating not to be able to share that excitement with the one who should truly be able to understand it.
Tonks was almost certain that Remus was going to offer to leave with Harry, Ron, and Hermione; and there was nothing she could do to stop it.
So needless to say, when Tonks heard a knock at the door, she'd been incredibly relieved.
She'd rushed to the door, and looked through the peephole. Tonks opened it partially and whipped out her wand.
"Our first date?" she asked of her husband.
Remus looked rather deflated, she noticed.
"The Three Broomsticks," he answered dully.
He made a move as to come in, but Tonks raised an eyebrow and her wand.
"Dora don't be ridiculous…"
Tonks stayed still, watching her husband carefully.
He sighed. "Favourite Quidditch Team."
"You don't have one," Tonks answered, and opened the door.
Remus closed it quietly behind him.
"You weren't going to come home," Tonks said.
Remus started. "How did you…?"
"I know you," she said, rubbing her modest baby bump soothingly. "What changed?"
Remus sighed. "Harry told me a few home truths. A few hours ago, actually. I've been wondering around the countryside in Dorset for most if the day."
Tonks smiled a little. "Sounds pleasant."
"I was thinking," Remus said. "And I came to the conclusion that Harry Potter is a lot wiser than I gave him credit for. Exactly like both of his parents."
Dora stepped forwards hesitantly, and Remus complied, his arms tightening around her.
Her head was on his chest; she could hear his heart beating, and the rise and fall of his chest was soothing. Oh, how she'd missed this.
"I'm sorry," Remus whispered into her presently bubblegum pink, spiky hair, before placing a kiss atop her head.
Tonks smiled, moving her head from his chest so she could look up at him properly. "I'm just glad you're home."
