I'm SO PISSED at the season finale last night! I loved Colby! He was probably my favorite character! Ugh…….Angst piece.
I don't own Numb3rs, or the characters/actors, CBS does. Damn them, if I did, this whole Colby thing would be a fluke.
The Effects of a Liar
Don paced back and forth in his apartment. He noticed that he only went here now if he was angry; and he was defiantly angry. The words of his shrink ran through his head.
"When one of them shines, it's on you," yea, so what is it when someone betrays you? Is that on you too?
"…I'm their boss, I don't have to trust them; they have to trust me!" He did trust Colby. With his friends, with his job, with his family…
With his life.
Don grabbed a beer out of the fridge, sat on the couch, and sighed. All the cases he worked on had to be rechecked…two years worth of cases.
Two years worth of lies.
And he trusted him.
Megan sat at her desk, not ready to head home. Her head was spinning too much.
24 hours after getting back to her guys, she finds out about this. That one of her closest friends was a spy?
She looked over to a picture pinned up on the bulletin board by her computer. Last month's annual softball game. David had taken a picture of them; Colby's arm draped around her shoulder casually. She'd miss him. Working together, their playful banter, his smart remarks…
Were those all an act?
She began to crush the picture in her hand, but stopped. Instead, she put it in the bottom drawer of her desk.
Best to remember the good times.
Charlie stood in his garage and stared at the blank blackboard. This is ridiculous; he couldn't even do MATH right now! In a burst of anger, he threw the chalk in his hand at the board, listening to it make a satisfying splat as little pieces hit the ground.
He wished none of this ever happened. He wished that he never found the Janus list; that they could go back to last week and be completely oblivious to the fact that Colby was a spy…
A traitor…
Back to the time where he was their friend and no one knew any better.
"A MAZE? You guys risked my life in a maze…" Charlie remembered doing everything he could to make sure Colby wouldn't get hurt in that case.
Now he wished he hadn't. That he'd been careless or missed a step.
Because, to Charlie, Colby being dead and a friend is much better than him alive and a double agent.
David had no idea where he was going. He'd been in his car for 3 hours, simply driving around and not going anywhere, not even stopping.
He was his partner, his best friend, and he didn't see the signs.
Nothing pointed out that he'd lied to them.
It was tearing David up. He told Colby things he didn't trust anyone else with, and he thought Granger had done the same.
Was anything he said to them the truth? Or was it all made up stories to gain their trust?
David couldn't take it anymore. He pulled his car over into an empty lot and bowed his head, tears rolling down his face in both anger and disappointment.
How could he let this happen?
His room was dark, his bed was cold, the food tasted like shit, and he had no one to confide in.
Colby stared at the wall, thinking about how this all happened. Dwayne Carter had come to him after their term in Afghanistan. He had said he was going to go work for the Chinese, and if he knew what was good for him…
No, this wasn't Dwayne's fault…
It was his. He hurt everyone: Don, Megan, David, Charlie…everyone.
When Dwayne was put away, he tried to get out of it; he didn't want to do this anymore. He did what he was told not to do.
He got close to them, and they got close to him. He didn't want anyone to get hurt. And yet…
That's exactly what he did.
Colby put his head in his hands.
What had he done?
End.
