I have always loved the song 'I was only 19 (A walk in light green)' by Redgum. You should go listen to it right now! So this is just a really pointless changing of the words of that song so that they now have Scarecrow feels.
The song is originally about PTSD and is just a beautiful portrayal of the effects of the Vietnam war on the soldiers that fought in it.
Practically all the words aren't mine, the song clearly isn't! I'm just playing with them so I apologise if you were expecting something... good or original. Haha
P.S.
OCS = Officer Candidate School.
Tinnies = Slang for beer
This was written purely for my own amusement so in my imagination Carnegies and The Shoalwater are both pubs. Just roll with it :P

My Grandfather and my Nanny saw us passing our commission at The Pearl
We were a long way from OCS
The sixth battalion was the next to tour and it was me to fly the jet
We did Carnegies and The Shoalwater before we left
xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox
US Marines lined the footpaths as we marched down to the beat
This clip here from that day shows me young and strong and clean
And there's me in my point hat with me M14 and greens
God help me - I was just twenty three

From the WASP deck flying Jumpjets to the dust at Quantico
I'd been in and proud of service now for months
And we made our planes our home, Pictures and pinups on the Dash
As an ancient colonel shouted through the hub
xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox
And can you tell me, doctor, why I still can't get to sleep?
And night time's just a jungle dark and a barking M.16?
And what's this flash that comes and goes, can you tell me what it means?
God help me - I was just Twenty Three

A four week operation, when each flight could be your last one off the ground
It was a war within yourself
But you wouldn't let your mates down, 'til they had you dusted off
So you peeled your eyes and thought about somethin' else
xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox
And then someone yelled out "Contact", and the flight controller swore
I crashed down there for days, and I got almighty sore
And yes I did get captured, the day that Jack Walsh creamed la creme
God help me - they was sending in a team
xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox
And I can still imagine myself drinkin' tinnies in the Hotel
While lying in a Bosnian farmhouse in the woods
And I can still hear it all, lying screaming in the jungle
'Til the team came in and killed the bloody row
xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox
And the Marine Corps legends didn't mention all my blood and tears
And the stories that my Grandad told me never seemed quite real
I caught those scars from those men 'cause I wouldn't even tell
God help me, I was just Twenty Three
xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxox
And can you tell me, doctor, why I still can't get to sleep?
And why the Chanel 7 chopper chills me to my feet?
And then this flash it comes and goes, can you tell me why this feels?
God help me - I was just Twenty Three
