Chapter 1
It was a very ominous night. Nighthowler and his pack had just returned from their hunt, without much luck. It had not been a good week for the hunting pack. They could not explain why, but the deer had seemed to retreat early this year. It was not like them. But they were forced to return home with only enough to feed one or two wolves, maybe three, if they all sacrificed a little. They were returning to the clan at a brisk pace, eager to be home after a long week of hunting. But something stopped Nighthowler in his tracks, he lifted up his head, and inhaled a deep breath of the night air. Something was coming, but it carried no scent. This deeply concerned Nighthowler, who gave a command to the rest of his pack. He told them to get ready to fight. All of the other wolves feeling confused and scared, but trained not to show emotion in the presence of a possible threat, obeying their leader, prepared themselves for the worst.
"All right men." barked the grey, scarred wolf that was Nighthowler. "I am not sure who, or what this enemy is, but we will fight it with bravery and vigor. You are to stand your ground, and whatever you do, don't show weakness."
"Sir yes sir!" the brave soldier wolves barked back in eager anticipation to see who this unknown enemy was. They all got down into a fighting position and got quiet.
It was so quiet you could hear the blades of grass move under each of the wolves paws if they moved even the slightest amount. But that was not the only sound to be heard. The only other sound to fill the night air was the beating of an unknown creature's paws against the cold, damp earth. But this sound confused Nighthowler for it was not soft enough to be the swift movement of a small animal, but it was not heavy enough to be the sound of a larger animal's paws beating against the ground.
"What is this creature, and why is it coming towards us?, Nighthowler pondered, while making sure that none of his soliders got up to stretch, or shake off the cold night air. He denied himself that leisure as well. Deep in though of what their enemy might be, Nighthowler hadn't noticed that the strange creature's footsteps had neared considerably. It was here! What the it's a ….
