Javier Vachon sat cross-legged in the center of the church. On one side of him, there was a somewhat dusty bottle of blood. On the other, a single candle burned. Its flame was the only light piercing the darkness of the church. He gazed at the light, willing its brightness to fill his mind, obliterating all other thoughts. No matter how he fought against it, the vision of the flame was replaced by a vision of a woman with short blonde hair and hazel eyes.

I feel your lips I taste your skin

I need to know I need to feel you from within

She was a thing of beauty, Tracy Vetter. Her soft hair, her sculpted cheekbones, her full lips – her physical attributes were only enhanced by her intelligence and courage.

As your blood burns through my skin

I feel complete I breathe you in

He knew he should leave Toronto and forget her existence. Her partner, Nick Knight, was perfectly capable of looking after her if she got too close to the Community. Still, he was reluctant to leave the church. After centuries of running, it had come to be a place of refuge. And with Tracy occasionally popping in, even if it was to ask for help, it began to seem like home.

It's where you end and I begin

If only I could stay here

Forever

He knew she valued her mortality and after Urs, he would never bring across anyone against their will again. Now Tracy was gone. She had told him, in a tone that meant no argument, she did not want to see him again. He was not to contact her in way, shape or form. He was to forget that she ever existed. She would do the same.

So much to tell you So much to show you

So much to confide

Now that I'm inside you

He knew she was serious and it grieved him.

We are flesh We are one

So why do I feel so much guilt for what I've done

She had come to him one night in some emotional distress. He had tried to ask her what had happened, but she would not answer. She had simply thrown her arms around him and buried her face in his chest. He held her for a while, offering what solace she could. Suddenly, she had raised her head and kissed him. Startled at first, he returned the kiss when he discovered that she wasn't going to be letting go anytime soon. From there, their passion grew and they made love.

As your blood burns through my skin

I feel release I breathe you in

It had been a wonderful night. Their intimacy was everything he had dreamed it might be. The smile on her face afterwards when he was holding her had lit up the entire church. He knew his own was just as bright. A new chapter in his unlife had opened.

It's where you end and I begin

If only I could stay here

Forever

But, as abruptly as it had opened, it was shut tight. The next night, she had returned. Withdrawn and silent, she had returned his greeting kiss without passion. She paced around the room, looking at various things and not responding to any of his questions. Abruptly, she had turned around and dropped the bombshell. In an emotionless voice, she asked him not to contact her again. He had reached out his hands to talk her out of it, but she had stepped back. In her first display of emotion, she had pleaded with him to not argue or talk her out of it. Studying her, he realized that she was waiting for him to fly into a rage and either kill her or bring her across. In that moment, he lost his will to fight and allowed her to walk out of his life.

So much to tell you So much to give to you

So much to confide

Now that I'm inside

He knew in time, his hurt would fade and she would become a treasured memory to linger over occasionally. There would be other women and other loves. But on this cold Toronto night, he mourned the loss of a lover and a friend.
