Percy Jackson just wanted a normal life.
Throughout his childhood, there was some unexplainable things that happened in his life. Like why does he see women when he swims in the ocean? Why did the sharks speak to him in that field trip at Marine World? Why did a strange man with only one eye visit him at school? Of course, no one believed Percy. He was some random kid with ADHD and dyslexia, of course he would be seeing and hearing things. Percy eventually would brush those memories away, but they never left. From time to time, those memories lingered. And now, Percy would run into something that simply was impossible to dismiss.
It was a really cloudy day. Then again, New York had been cloudy since the end of December. Percy hopped into the school bus, it was field trip day. Where to? The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Sounds really boring, but Percy was eager to leave the school, where his dyslexia makes his head hurt everyday. Percy sits by his handicapped best friend, Grover Underwood, and fist bumps him.
"You ready for this field trip?" Grover said.
"I'm just glad to be away from Yancy for today," Percy replied.
Mr. Brunner, one of the chaperones, led the tour at the museum. They stopped by some stone columns and murals and Mr. Brunner explained what they represented. Percy actually for once found something he wanted to listen to, but the rest of the students kept talking. Percy eventually got annoyed and spoke up, "Will you shut up already?"
That came out a little too loud. The students snickered and Mr. Brunner stopped his story.
"Mr. Jackson, did you have a comment?", he said.
"No…sorry", Percy replied, blushing.
"Perhaps you can tell us what this picture represents?", Mr. Brunner said as he pointed to it.
"That's Kronos, eating his children…right?"
"Yes…and he did this because…?"
"Kronos was the King of the Titans, and he didn't trust his children. So he ate them…except for Zeus. Zeus would grow up and trick his dad into…barfing his own kids up."
The students make gagging sounds and disgusted expressions.
"And because of that, there was this big war between the gods and Titans, and the gods won."
"Why the hell does this even matter?", one of the students murmured.
"Good question. Mr. Jackson, why does this matter so much?" Mr. Brunner replied catching what the student whispered.
Percy shrugs. "I don't know".
Mr. Brunner looked disappointed. "Half credit. Zeus did indeed give his father a mixture of mustard and wine, making him disgorge his siblings who were living undigested in Kronos's stomach. The gods defeated their father, sliced him apart with his own scythe, and scattered his remains in Tartarus, the darkest part of the underworld. On that note, it's time for lunch."
The class go outside. Percy walks out alongside Grover.
Percy grinned. "We're supposed to eat after hearing that?"
They laugh together and Mr. Brunner interrupts them.
"Mr. Jackson."
Percy stops laughing and sighs exasperatedly. He motions Grover to go on without him.
"Yes, sir?"
"You must learn to answer my question."
"About what?"
"About life, and how your studies apply to it", Mr. Brunner said. "What you learn from me is vitally important. I expect you to treat it as such. I will accept only the best from you, Percy."
Percy stares at him in annoyance.
"Yeah, sure", Percy says as he walks away. Going back, he sees Grover being picked on by the school bully, Nancy Bobofit. Nancy takes one of Grover's crutches.
"Hey! Give it back!", Grover exclaimed.
Nancy backs away, holding his crutch.
"Why don't you come and take it from me, loser?", Nancy taunted.
Grover angrily grunts and Percy pops out from behind Nancy and grabs the crutch.
"He said…give…it…back", Percy said.
"Make me, Jackson", Nancy replied.
Percy tugs on the crutch and extends his hand to push Nancy when suddenly she screams and falls into a nearby puddle by some force of nature. Even Percy looks confused by what just happened. The other chaperone, Mrs. Dodds, approaches to see the commotion.
"Percy pushed me!", claimed Nancy.
Percy frowned. "But…I didn't push her…she fell…"
Mrs. Dodds motion to Percy. "You. Come with me."
Grover intervened. "Wait-"
"I don't think so, Underwood."
Grover shuts up reluctantly.
"Hey, I'll be fine. Here", Percy said as he gave Grover his crutch back. "I'll be right back."
Grover murmured something that Percy didn't catch, but Percy decided not to ask. He walks after Mrs. Dodds. She enters the museum and Percy follows her and into a room full of statues of Greek gods.
"You've been giving us a lot of trouble, young man." Mrs. Dodds growled.
"Sorry… ma'am," Percy apologized.
"Did you really think you would get away with it?"
"Get away with what? Pushing Nancy?", Percy questioned.
"We are not fools, Percy Jackson. It was only a matter of time before we found you out. Confess and you will suffer less pain", she said.
Thunder shakes the building and Percy looks at Mrs. Dodds in confusion.
"Well?", she asked.
"Um…"
"Your time is up."
And before Percy's eyes, Mrs. Dodds transforms. Her eyes glowed, her nails stretched into talons, and her arms melted into bat-like wings. She was no human, but some sort of bat-granny…thing. Percy stared, wide-eyed.
Percy gasped. "What the hell…"
"Percy!" Mr. Brunner yelled, suddenly appearing at the doorway. "Catch!"
Mr. Brunner throws a pen at Percy. Mrs. Dodds lunges and Percy ducks and rolls under her. He catches the pen, but in his hand, he's suddenly holding a bronze double-edged sword. Mrs. Dodds regained her composure and prepares to lunge again.
"DIE!", she screamed.
She pounces at Percy and with a battle cry, Percy swings the sword and slices her. Mrs. Dodds explodes into dust. She's gone and Percy is alone, heaving, with a pen in his hand again. Percy scowls at the pen, wondering how it just switched back. Percy sits on the floor and holds his head, thinking about all the memories again. Percy has had enough, he's convinced now more than ever that something is weird about his life. He means, come on! He just killed (sort of?) a bat-lady with a sword that switches into a pen. He CANNOT be crazy. And he's determined to find some answers. Percy gets up with new determination and walks outside. He runs into Nancy.
Nancy smirks. "So…did Mrs. Kerr give you detention?"
Percy raises his eyebrows. "Who?!"
"Our teacher, dumbass. Who else?
Percy shakes his head. "I don't know who the hell you're talking about."
Nancy scoffs. "Nevermind."
Nancy walks away and Percy finds Grover.
"Grover, where's Mrs. Dodds?"
Grover pauses and looks away before asking Percy who he is talking about.
"Dude, stop lying to me. Where'd she go?", Percy pressed.
But Grover kept looking away without responding. Percy scoffs and shakes his head before looking for Mr. Brunner.
"Ah, yes. That would be my pen", Mr. Brunner said, looking up. "Please bring your own writing utensil in the future, Mr. Jackson."
Percy stares awkwardly at the pen before handing it to Mr. Brunner.
"Sir, you know where Mrs. Dodds went?"
Mr. Brunner stared blankly. "Who?"
"Other chaperone? Mrs. Dodds? Pre-algebra teacher?", Percy questioned.
Mr. Brunner frowned, looking concerned. "Percy, Mrs. Dodds isn't on this field trip. She doesn't even exist. Are you feeling alright, Percy?"
Percy remained emotionless. "Yeah…I'm fine."
Percy knew he was lying. He wanted answers for what he just saw but they weren't being to given to him at all at the moment. Maybe he could ask his mom. That means waiting until summer vacation for his answers. And with his ADHD, patience isn't exactly one of his virtues. In the meantime, he was going to have to move on with his life, but who knows? Maybe he'll get lucky.
