A Journal Entry by Darry

Author's Notes: This was originally school work for English, but since I got a pretty good mark on it I decided to post it on here. It's basically a scene from the novel in Darry's point-of-view. I hope you enjoy it though.

Dear Journal,

Last night wasn't like any other normal night. My little brother, Ponyboy, was hanging out with Johnny and Dally, so I've heard. Usually he'd have to be home by twelve o'clock pm, but oddly, he wasn't.

I waited... I worried... I just had to do something to keep my mind off of the situation, so I plopped into my favorite chair and started reading the newspaper. The front door could be easily seen from where I was sitting, so I could just turn my head if I ever saw the golden-like doorknob moving. Flipping though the flimsy paper, I noticed the 'Obituary' section.

A sudden thought hit my head like a bullet as I read about the recent deaths. What if the Socs tried to jump Ponyboy again? What if they had beaten him to the pulp like they did to Johnny? What if... what if they killed him? My heart nearly jumped as I heard a click, then a creaking sound from the front door. It was Ponyboy.

He looked as if he was trembling a little, but I couldn't "see" at the moment. I instantly hopped out of the chair with a tight feeling in my chest, ready to burst like a volcano. Suddenly to break the short silence I started to yell questions at him.

"Where the heck have you been? Do you know what time it is? Where were you, Ponyboy? Where in the almighty universe were you?" were the kinds of questions I asked. My little brother explained that he dozed off in the lot by accident, but I regrettably yelled at him some more. Soda, who was awake from sleeping on the couch at that moment, tried to stop me as usual.

I never knew why Soda always stuck up for Ponyboy... I mean, in another hour or so I would have called the police to look for him! Even though I never hollered at Soda, even though no one else would imagine hollering at Soda... I did. A sudden bad feeling was rising in my stomach as I was saying how I was sick and tired of him sticking up for Ponyboy all of the time.

Then unexpectedly, Ponyboy yelled at me. It was sort of like a zoo at the moment: raging and out of control, perfectly describing me when I actually slapped Ponyboy. Everyone of us was surprised. I looked at the hand that I slapped with, shocked and confused at the same time. As fast as I had used my hand, Ponyboy dashed out of the door.

"Pony, I didn't mean to!" I screamed. He didn't come back; it was like he was ignoring me. I was still shocked that I was acting like an animal; especially since I acted like an animal towards my little brother...

Author's Notes: Hopefully it wasn't too dull. I had to quickly work on it because of the due date. ;;
