Daylight
(Song by Maroon 5)
A/N: This is my first fanfic I've actually published. It's a Percabeth songfic about what I think might happen during the Argo II's journey. Many, many thanks to superfangirl13 and akempfafa99 for pressuring me to do this. Takes place after House of Hades. I've had to edit the song lyrics out, so a) my apologies and b) please listen to the song as you read.
Verse 1:
On the Argo II, one lone person was awake. Percy lay in his cabin bed, staring at the girl in his arms. Annabeth lay sleeping, a peaceful look on her face. It was nice to see her sleeping without any nightmares‒ ever since they had escaped Tartarus, she'd been having "terrible dreams" she had refused to elaborate on. However bad her dreams were, they couldn't have besen as bad as his. Ever since they had fallen into Tartarus, he had had dreams of Gaea, whispering, taunting. For every week you do not come to me, one of your loved ones die. Hurry, demigod. The satyr is already gone. Who next? The Cyclops? The centaur? Or maybe that feisty little girl you love so much. What was her name? Annabeth? He had woken in a cold sweat, instinctively looking down, making sure she was still there. In that moment, he knew he had to go.
Verse 2:
He had vowed to not sleep again tonight. He had vowed to stay awake. Percy stared at her face, trying to memorize it. This would be the last time he would see her while he still lived. She looked so vulnerable. So exposed. How could he leave her behind?
Chorus:
He was already counting down the minutes till daylight, trying to put off the inevitable. Annabeth sighed in her sleep and curled into his side. Reflectively, his arms tightened around her, never wanting to let go. Never wanting to leave her alone.
Verse 3:
So there he was, staring at her face like an idiot‒ he was probably drooling too. The sun began to rise, casting a pearl-rose glow on her face. Percy groaned mentally. He didn't want to leave, but in all honesty, it was either him or the people he loved. His fatal flaw.
Verse 4:
Honestly, though‒how could anyone expect one single person to give up so much? His friends, his family, now his own life. He touched Annabeth's sleeping face softly, desperately trying to commit it to memory. Not even Hera could make me forget you.
Chorus:
Hell, he couldn't even stand the thought of her away from him. Even the cruelest gods had to admit they deserved a break. But apparently that didn't fly with Gaea. He buried his face in her hair, inhaling the faint lemon scent oh=f her shampoo. I can't do this. Bridge:
Ever since they had met, their relationship had been always moving, always changing. From enemies to friends to lovers. . . to mourners. He had loved the thrill of being with her‒how it never seemed to end. Even in Tartarus they had been together. Right now that was all he wanted. Chorus:
Cautiously, not wanting wake her, he touched her face, fitting his hand along her cheek. Despite the gentle touch, her eyes fluttered open and, seeing him, Annabeth smiled, still in her dream. He gently kissed her forehead, and her eyes whispered shut once more. A single betraying tear fell from his eye, spattering on her forehead. Percy kissed her once more, savoring the feeling. Then he rose and walked softly out the door.
A/N: Thank you all for reading my angsty rambling about my favorite ship. The song was "Daylight" by Maroon 5. Oh yeah‒did anyone catch the ref to the dedication in Son of Neptune? Again, thanks for reading, and please leave an honest review. Even flames. They're what keep me warm at night.
