The garden

They were in her quarter's sharing a late night meal. They had spent
most of the evening and a good part of the night working on crew
reports and evaluations.

Chakotay leaned back and looked at his captain for a long moment.

"What is it?" she asked without even looking at him.

"You are getting grumpy again," he said, with a special emphasis
on the word grumpy, as if it had its own significance.

"I am most certainly not!" And then with a mischievous grin she
looked up at him and said:"may be it is you who is feeling
'grumpy'."

Back on New Earth they had admitted their attraction to each
other. They had know that with prolong exposure to each other and
little competition from outside, it would grow to much more.

However, Voyager had came back and they both knew that they
would not be able to explore the potential relationship completely.
Kathryn firmly believed that she could not have a lover for first
officer. A quarrel between the sheets could have devastating
impacts on the bridge later. The crew had to be a united force at all
times in order to get home. They could not be united if the first
officer and the captain could not agree.

Voyager was not the place for a captain to have a relationship.
There were too many obligations, too many responsibilities. She did
not have the time or the energy to divert to a relationship. A
relationship was like a garden, it needed to be tended to. It had to
be watered and nourished. The weeds had to be pulled out on a
regular basis, or they would take over making everything ugly.
Seedlings needed mothering in order to grow into strong beautiful
plants.

In the beginning, Chakotay had not understood this. All he saw was
a strong spirited woman that he was deeply attracted too. He
wanted to plant that garden. He wanted to take care of it. However,
he came to understand that this type of garden was too much for
one person to tend to. It needed two keepers.

Through the years he came to really understand Kathryn's point of
view. Most important of all, he came to share it.

One evening, much like the one they were sharing at that night, they
had come to a mutual agreement. They would try a romantic
relationship when they got back home. There, if a serious
unresolvable quarrel should occur, it would be easier to go on their
separate ways.

However, after all of this, they were still very human, with very
human needs. Because of their status on the ship, they could hardly
turn to others. So they became very good friends, with a little on
the side, as Chakotay had put it. They did not have the time to tend
to a garden but they could see to the well-being of a flower pot.

Chakotay hoped that it would become the cornerstone of their
garden, but he was very satisfied with what he had. Deep down he loved
Kathryn so much that he could not compromise her position as
captain. It was something his mind held onto firmly, even in the
midst of a biologically driven passion. They were human after all,
and their bodies often cried out for what they could deny their
minds.
