Chandler hated education and everything related to education. The only reason he was starting at college today was because he knew that he wanted to be paid a lot of money so he could escape from his parents and try to be happy.

All the other kids were being helped into their rooms by parents loaded with bags and boxes. Chandler was on his own – his mom had a spa appointment and his dad didn't even try and make an excuse. He parked his little car and grabbed as much stuff as he could to save the extra trips. He made his way slowly along the corridor until he found his name on the door of a room. He didn't even look to see who his roommate was. Whoever it was would probably despise him anyway.

The other young man was stood in the room with his parents and appeared to be struggling to fight off his mom, who was sobbing that she had never been separated from her baby boy for so long and asking how she could possibly survive without him. Seeing that Chandler had entered the room, the young man renewed his efforts to fight her off.

"You'll be fine mom. I'll be fine. Please, I need to unpack. You've got a long drive back."

The father gently wrapped his arms around his wife and led her from the room, nodding in acknowledgement to Chandler and disappearing round the corner with a muffled "Bye son."

Chandler's roommate smiled apologetically, "Sorry you had to see that. My mom's a bit-well-crazy."

"No worries man."

He held out a hand, "I'm Ross Gellar."

Juggling his boxes, Chandler held out his own hand, "Chandler Bing."

"Where are your folks?"

"Oh, um, they couldn't make it."

Ross' face crinkled with sympathy, "That sucks man. Here, let me come and help you with the rest of your stuff."

"Oh no worries man."

"I insist. We've got to look out for each other right? Where's your car?"
