Prompt: The Circle of Life - my character experiences your character's death
Prompt found on askboxmemes on tumblr.
"These killings began as soon as Misa Amane was freed."
"Ryuzaki, are you still going on about that? She has nothing to do with this!"
The dark shinigami tilted his head curiously, listening to the voices outside of the room of his location. He had decided to drop by the headquarters of the investigation to check if these humans had found anything interesting, and indeed they had.
Of course it was Misa Amane doing the killings - she was the only one who possessed a notebook in this region, plus, no other shinigami were around besides Rem - but why? Why would Light order her to carry out Kira's judgments in such an obvious manner? She was sure to get caught, and then -
"Even if we don't plan on publicly acknowledging the notebook," another voice interjected, "the least we can do is execute the killer!"
Ah. Of course.
If Misa Amane was caught and executed, the detective L Lawliet would be responsible. The only apparent way to ensure her life and happiness would be to kill L Lawliet. However, the only one who actually knew the mysterious detective's name to write it down was...
A mischievous grin curled on the dark creature's face. Light Yagami... to think that he could manipulate even a god of death to his own advantage. He has truly surpassed them.
A ghost white shinigami formed in front of him, a black notebook and a pen studded with skulls in her hand. Her sallow eyes passed over Ryuk, but she made no sign of acknowledgement. She flipped open her notebook after seven pages - Misa's lucky number, Ryuk recalled once hearing - and, without hesitation, placed pen to paper.
He watched as her pen scratched two words across the page. Watched as her pen slowly disintegrated into ivory-colored sand. Watched as she closed the book with a firm resolved finality.
As Ryuk looked on, her shoulders and hair started crumbling into fine white powder. She did not look up. She had deliberately extended a human's lifespan. She knew her fate, and it was inescapable.
As the shinigami gradually became indistinguishable from the pile of ghost white sand on the floor, Ryuk growled softly, chuckling, "Well, Rem. It's been fun."
