The Eyes of the Map

"Harry found himself taking it out simply to stare at Ginny's name in the girls' dormitory, wondering whether the intensity with which he gazed at it might break into her sleep, that she would somehow know he was thinking about her, hoping that she was all right." Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

'Ginny?'

Harry awoke, the remains of his dream circling in his head. Ginny had been there, as she always was, at the forefront of his mind. Sitting up, he looked around the drab tent, spotting Hermione asleep on Ron's bunk. Resentment and not a little disappointment over Ron's departure flooded his stomach. Pushing that aside, Harry stretched and went outside the tent, collecting the Horcrux and pulling it over his head as he went.

As Harry wandered close the bushes surrounding the tent, searching for any edible berries his thoughts strayed back to Ginny. He missed her so much it had become a constant ache in his stomach. He longed to see her, touch her, just look at her and know she was safe. Each night he would wait until Hermione had fallen asleep before he retrieved the Marauder's Map.

'I solemnly swear I am up to no good.'

Watching the ink lines spread out from the tip of his wand, Harry's eyes automatically strayed to Gryffindor Tower, hunting for Ginny's name among the many others there. Breathing a sigh of relief when he found her, Harry settled back onto his bunk and just watched. Watched the dot of the person he was most afraid for, most willing to fight for, the person he most wanted to see.

By watching her dot on the Marauders Map, Harry felt as though he was offering Ginny some protection, a message to say he was thinking of her. While Hogwarts was not the safe haven it once was, seeing Ginny's dot gave him some comfort that she was still as safe as she could be, that she hadn't been forced to hide yet.

Harry continued to gaze at Ginny's name until the early hours of the morning, dreaming of a future when they could someday be together again, without the threat of Voldemort hanging over the world.

'Mischief managed.'

Miles away, Ginny Weasley woke up with a start. A warm rush of comfort flooded through her body as she remembered her dream. Harry was standing there, looking at her as if she was the greatest prize in the world, watching over her, keeping her safe.
