Nina had seemed distressed and, in the spirit of their budding friendship, the younger girl had pulled her aside. Friends comforted each other when they were hurt so when Nina looked ready to bite off Dr. Rosen's head, Rachel pulled her out.
The taller brunette paced the floor of her office back and forth, glaring out the panes of glass at Dr. Rosen. Rachel stepped into her roommate's path, stopping her.
"What's going on with you, Nina?"
"He just-he can't-he promised, Rachel!" Nina was obviously flustered, her hands flinging about in the air as she spoke. Rachel was a little lost about what to do in the situation; she'd never really had girl friends before, not close ones anyway. The only person she ever had even remotely emotional discussions with was Gary. Rachel knew she had to do or say something to help Nina. Nina wasn't thinking rational. Rachel could help her think rationally.
"I know. He did promise to help Skylar, but he can't really go against orders, can he?"
"Yes, he can, Rachel! He could if he wanted to! He just doesn't want to; he doesn't care enough." Nina bit off angrily and the younger girl tried not to take offense to the tone. After all, Rachel knew Nina was pissed off at Dr. Rosen, but she had always had a problem with taking blame on herself. Rachel blinked and the energy seemed to drain out of Nina. She took a deep breath and smiled sadly at her friend. "I'm sorry, Rachel. You don't deserve my anger."
"It's okay, Nina. I know you get attached to people deeply; it must hurt you greatly to watch what you see as Dr. Rosen abandoning people you care about. However, there really isn't much he can do to stop what's happening, Nina. You know he would if he could, but he can't."
"I do know that, Rachel, but it's hard. If it were Gary, we were talking about here. If it were Gary Dr. Rosen was just going to hand over then you'd fully understand my side of this."
"He-he wouldn't do that!" Rachel declared vehemently, tears forming in her eyes at the mere idea. Gary was too important to the team. "Dr. Rosen wouldn't let anything like that happen to Gary…or us!"
"Yes, he will. Just as soon as Gary or any of us is even perceived as a risk, he will hand us over without blinking an eye. He claims to care about all of us, but once upon a time he said that to Skylar and Marcus too and what good did that do them?" Nina grabbed her jacket suddenly. "I have to help Skylar."
"But-"
"What would you do if it were Gary, Rachel?"
Rachel made no further attempts to stop Nina. If it were Gary, Rachel would stop not at nothing to protect him. If Skylar was Nina's Gary then Rachel certainly wasn't going to stand her way. In fact, she crossed her fingers and wished for good fortune to befall the two.
