Prologue
I looked around the blackened night, hoping that sight would come back to me. My heart sunk as no images broke through the darkness. Then sound shot through the emptiness. A scream from a young girl, accompanied by grunts and sounds of struggle by others. I twisted in my shackles and peered through the darkness, wanting to see the new comers. But I was sightless in this unkind prison. All I could do was listen.
I heard my cell door open, someone flung to the ground with a thud, and the door close again. I then heard a few more cell doors open and close. Then a body moved against my knees on the floor. I breathed slowly and reached out to the body, praying it was still alive. My hands skimmed over the features till they found the throat and a pulse. He was alive.
