The leaves hung off of the branches, shading Viktor. He knew she probably won't want to see him, but he had to try. Although the Yule Ball had been years ago and so much had happened since then, he never quite forgot Hermione Granger. It was impossible to forget the spark in her eyes when she talked about a favorite book or author. Impossible to forget how she didn't hang on his every word just because of his Quidditch talent. Impossible to forget that she didn't make fun of his less than perfect English. Impossible to forget just how beautiful she was.

Hermione was one of a kind, and he would never be able to fully move on from her. That was why if there was even a minimal chance that she returned his feelings, he had to take it, even if he ran the risk of being told there would never be anything between them.

The sound of grass crunching came to his ears and with his heart beating rapidly, he looked at the figure approaching him.

Familiar brown eyes met his own eyes. "Hi," she breathed.

He swallowed. "Hermione, I wasn't sure I was going to see you," he murmured.

Hermione pushed a strand of hair behind her ear. "I know. Things are crazy at the castle. People are mourning for the dead. Others are celebrating the fact that they're still alive."

"Did you lose anyone?" he asked, afraid to hear a yes. Hermione didn't deserve that kind of pain.

Her eyes saddened. "The closest friend I lost was Fred Weasley. I think everyone lost someone, though. Just look at Harry. He lost his parents when he was a baby. And he lost his godfather a couple of years ago. And now he lost his surrogate godfather as well, not to mention Tonks. And now he has to worry about his orphaned godson. I'm not sure if he's going to be okay or if this will be the thing that breaks him."

Viktor put a soft hand on her shoulder. "He'll be okay because he has you and his other friends to watch out for him."

Hermione nodded. "Maybe. Can we talk about something else?"

"Of course," Viktor replied, afraid to hope.

"Ron kissed me today."

And Viktor's heart froze as his face turned into a mask. "Oh, I see. Why are you telling this?" He hoped he didn't sound bitter; it wasn't Hermione's fault that she had feelings for the undeserving redhead.

"Because all I could think about was you and our dance at Bill and Fleur's wedding," she admitted.

"Really?" Viktor asked.

Hermione nodded. "Maybe this is crazy. We've only exchanged letters since the Triwizard Tournament, and I didn't really have feelings for you that year. I think I was too young to be thinking about relationships. But I think I really like you."

"I like you too," Viktor easily admitted.

It wasn't much, but Viktor was sure this was the start of something real. Maybe this time, Viktor would get the girl. He hoped so.
