Title: Miles More To Go
Summary: If only he wasn't one hundred miles gone...

The invitation in her crystalline blue eyes and the half-hopeful, half-resigned smile on her lips pulled him in. The temptation of her offer was dangerous, whispering in his ear. She was giving him a chance to become someone he had only dreamed of becoming, someone who didn't have multiple bounties attached to his name, someone who didn't have to constantly look over his shoulder. He smiled, a gentle half-smile, and reached out to grasp her delicate face in his rough, bloody hands.

"The next Johnny and June..." She had said, the words still danced in his mind, the devil on his shoulder tugging him towards a new life and away from his past. The weight of his promises kept him sealed to solid ground, he had no contract to Nate but his honor... and that was harder to sever than any signed paper. His life was destined to be dangerous, and had it been any other life he would never be standing before this resplendent star-to-be. Perhaps in that was the irony that now reared it's ugly head.

He forced himself to do no more than brush a farewell kiss to her parted lips and ignore the sadness in her eyes, eyes that made him want nothing more than to stay. As she was hurried away to her future, he found himself left in the dust; forever to wander the road from which there is no return.

If only he had chosen a different road. A different life. A different destiny.

If only he wasn't one hundred miles gone...
