AN: Sorry this story is also mega short, I just can't do whole stories! Thanxz to my lovely friend who typed this up, she knows I love her!
Martha smiled, the plan was coming along and soon they would be out of here, the world free from the dreaded Valaxians. She glanced over at the Doctor and clapped her hands.
'It's all coming up a bed of roses!' She exclaimed, only to see the Doctors face fall.
'Such a funny phrase,' the Doctor muttered. 'A bed of roses ...roses ... Rose...' His thoughts flicked to an image of a lonely beach, empty except a lone figure, a blond woman of twenty. His mind skipped then halted when he heard those the words again, the words that echoed round his soul, 'I love you'.
Martha looked concerned; this wasn't the first time she had seen the Doctor suddenly become lost in though. The strangest things would trigger it, an action, a word or even a phrase. However there was always a constant link and Martha thought she knew what it was.
'Who was she?' She asked, shocking even herself with the forwardness of her question.
'Huh' the Doctor muttered coming out of his daze. 'I never said anything.'
'Who was she?' Martha asked again feeling like she'd stepped over the line.
'My best friend' He replied, turning away from her.
'Did you love her?' She seemed to have hit a nerve, the time lords head snapped up, his eyes full of pain and remorse.
'Very much' he whispered, so quiet she could barely hear. 'But she's gone ... she wouldn't expect me to dwell on the past.'
Martha was shocked, 'She, she died?'
'Oh, no,' the Doctor explained, 'She's just far, far away.'
'And you can't reach her?'
'I could.'
'Then why not?' Surely if he loved her it was worth it?
'Because the whole of time would fracture, two universes would collapse.' He spoke like he had spent a lot of time thinking about it.
'So.'
The Doctor smiled sadly, 'That's exactly what she said.'
