The Gentlemen

The Gentlemen

Across the black asphalt street,

Houses on either side

White picket fences

Shining silver in the starlight

The Gentlemen were floating

Calm as a cloud

Their skulls bare in the starlight

Grins fixed on their faces.

A little girl watched from her window

Her face as horrified as a prisoner facing the gallows

Eyes fixed on the Gentlemen

Their faces shone with delight

The Gentleman sang as they floated,

'Can't shout, can't even cry

The Gentlemen are coming by

'Close up your windows

Lock up your doors

We need a heart

And we might take yours'

The girl screamed silently,

For the Gentlemen had stolen her speech.

The Gentlemen's heads turned

Excitement in their hollow eyes

They had found a heart young and pure!

The girl ran and ran but didn't escape

She was caught and killed that very night.

Now, they say you see a little girl before the Gentlemen come

She sings their song with a verse of her own,

'Can't call to mom, can't say a word

You're going to die screaming, but you won't be heard.'
