Midnight's Chime

The stroke of midnight, rang through the air like a shrill scream.

Dark ominous walls that once served as comfort now felt like a cage threatening to trap him there for all of eternity, large shadows ran across the walls like devious figures that served to torment him leaned too close to his bed making the boy duck his head under the silky covers in fright. Suddenly everything went still and the boy realized he disliked the silence more than the empty chime of the grandfather clock inside his bedroom.

The shadows moved away from the bed before running across the wall to point at his window.

Footsteps echoed silently across the room as the boy paddled off his bed and went towards the only window in his room.

With all his lights off, the large glass sill was the only source of light that glinted inside his room.

Screams and laughter bounced through the walls making the boy shivered, They were fun of him.

The boy both fearful yet brave stepped forward, closer to the window.

And he went closer

And closer

And Closer

Until his face was practically pressed against the cool glass.

With his sharp eyes, the boy was able to make out the silhouette of a group of people trudging closer to the manor.

They looked like a peculiar bunch, all of them huddled together as if they were cold but with the way the person in the middle of their little circle was struggling, the boy thought otherwise.

Curious, the boy watched as the group came closer to the manor until the silhouette became a blend of colours from his clansmen.

The boy spied his father and uncle in front of the group while their subordinates dragged a squirming girl; probably no older than him, through the tall black gates.

The girl was odd, the boy surmised.

For one, the boy knew that her continued struggles against the shackles around her neck was futile; so, why was she still resisting?

Another was that it was his first time spotting someone with pink hair, even with all the eccentricity of Wonderland, the boy knew that she was probably a genetical abomination.

But what caught his interest the most was when the girl paused her struggling in order to glare at the general direction of his room; straight into his eyes, as if she knew someone was watching her even when it was practically 30 feet up from where she stood.

At the age of 8, young Sasuke found the most curious of all people; and she was a girl with abominable pink hair and hard emerald eyes that could glare hard enough to make him flinch.

..

Wonderland was the oddest place to live; Sasuke guessed, aside from the ever so changing time zones between hours and the peculiar laws of physics that was enforced in it, Wonderland held strange people with even stranger customs.

One was the unspoken rule about the invisible hierarchy within its people.

Odd tattoos would often litter the faces of the majority of the people, it would take forms of either Clovers, Hearts, Spades or Diamonds. Sasuke thought it was cool but his father begged to differ.

"They're unimportant Sasuke, they only serve the purpose of being another forgettable, Faceless card in a deck of cards"

Sasuke honestly didn't understand what his father was trying to explain yet he still gave the older man a small nod because he didn't want to disappoint him.

Then there are the ones with the odd eyes. His mother explained that they were a very special bunch, that they served a very important purpose in maintaining the balance of Wonderland. His brother called them Clans with the Uchiha Clan as an example. His father and Brother had very strange red eyes when they got emotional so Sasuke accepted the knowledge without question.

Sasuke also remembered the bunch that was half human and half beast. His Mom told them they were friendly but Father told him they were a menace.

Sasuke never met them yet so he was unsure what to feel about them just yet.

And finally they were the ones that was deemed special, very special in all aspects of the law. According to Shisui; his cousin. They were powerful beings that could command Wonderland itself with a flick of their wrist, People granted with the power of reincarnation with extraordinary abilities that defied the laws of nature.

Sasuke was awestruck when he had first heard about their tales, he told his mother and brother about them right away and they smiled at his antics, saying, "Yes, they're very fascinating in many ways".

So he was very confused on why his mother was hysterical when they found out He was a reincarnation of one those people.

The day they found out was normal, he woke up, had breakfast with his parents and elder brother then carried on with his studies inside the library.

But then suddenly after finishing his third book, a loud ringing rang through his ear and a stabbing pain was etched unto his back. Sasuke dropped to the floor, screaming his heart out in pain as writhed on the carpets before the cooling touch of his Mother broke him out of the pain hazed visions.

Sasuke could remember the look of pure panic in his mother's and brother's eyes, he could even see a hint of blatant concern in Father's, for a moment; Sasuke felt secure, loved and safe, he wanted to take his Mother's hand and assure her he's fine even with the tears gathering in the corner of his eyes.

But then the doors to the library doors bursts open with a slam and several men clad in a red uniform strolled in without care, All of them pointed their weapons to his parents as if they were the ones acting hostile.

His brother was furious but one warning nudge from Father had him stiffening.

One man stepped forward towards his Parents, who were huddled very close to his shivering form.

He had golden blonde hair and crystal blue eyes that looked at them with a sick sense of empathy, he bowed a bit when Father sent him a withering glare.

"It seems your son was chosen after all, Fugaku" The man evenly eyed Sasuke for a bit as he passed a scroll to his parents.

"Well considering he could see them, we should have known from the start" Father ground out as he read the contents of the scroll.

Tension filled the room as the strange men still had their weapons primed and ready to attack while his Father and Brother were getting ready for a fight.

Mother was practically shaking when the realization finally dawned onto her as she watched the scene in front of her unfold, in an instant, she shielded him away from the red clad men, all the while yelling hysterically.

"No!" she sobbed as she pulled him closer to her before trying to calm down the violent spasms running across his back, when it didn't work; she looked pleadingly at the men and begged.

"Not him, not my baby"

"Please, find someone else"

"Mikoto" Father exclaimed with such a defeated tone that Sasuke barely recognized him.

His Mother automatically froze from the mutter of her name and all incoherent yells were silenced as she hugged Sasuke closer to her.

She played with the ends of his sweat matted hair, her gaze empty as she watched the blonde man with a hollow stare.

"Which reincarnation is he?" She asked ever so softly that the blue eyed man's eyes looked downcast and apologetic,

He looked uncomfortable at first, with his Mother's scrutinizing stare focused on him but a glare from his Brother had him frowning.

"Mad Hatter" was his only reply, tone clipped and dettached.

Silence soon ensued as the room became eerily still.

Soon the strange men one by one left the room until all thats left was the Blonde man from before.

"We'll give you a week to prepare before we take him back with us" and with that he left with a click of a heel and a stutter of the library doors.

His Brother was unusually still, his face was pale and twisted as if he was trying his best to swallow the bile rising in his throat.

Father put an arm around mother as the woman shook and started to sob. He felt her tighten her grip around him and squeeze hard enough to probably leave a bruise.

"Mikoto"

Mother broke down soon after that.

At the age of 10, Sasuke found out he was the reincarnation of the Mad Hatter. A man doomed to commit heinous crimes because of mistakes that would later make him fall into ruin.
