Not many would be out on a cold early fall night, but of course, Kimberly Walkins wasn't like many people. She was only 16, and she was already doing more than someone twice her age. Ever since her mother died 3 years ago, and her father worked two jobs nearly every day, she had been the one left to take care of her little brother.
Pulling her coat closer to her, she quickly hurried her walk as she made her way to the small apartment in Raccoon City that her family lived in. It wasn't much, two bedrooms, a bath, living room and kitchen. Just enough room to feel comfortable. Of course, 'comfortable' wasn't exactly the term she would use.
Looking around, she noticed just how quiet it was. According to her watch, it was only six o'clock.
Raccoon City was a strange place to live. But over the past few weeks, things have slowly become even more odd. People no longer walked alone, even during the day it seemed. Ever since the local paper began reporting strange attacks a while back, everyone has become scared.
It wasn't that she blamed them. There were times where she wished she could just stay home, rolled up in front of the TV, drinking a cup of hot chocolate. But there were times for that, and now wasn't one of them. It was up to her to go to school, to get a good education, so that one day she could go to college and make something of herself.
Kimberly froze, and looked up a nearby window. She was about three doors down from her own apartment, but for some reason, every time she passed by this place, a chill passed up her spine. She personally didn't know who lived there, but she had heard that it had once belonged to an old woman that had become senile and locked herself away. God only knew what really went on in there.
Moving on, she stepped up to her door, and fumbled for the key in her coat pocket. Slowly, she inserted the key, watching as the knob turned. Suddenly, some sort of sound came from the distance. Letting out a little gasp, she turned around, expecting to see someone standing behind her.
Waiting for her hair to fall from her eyes, she realized she was alone. Obviously the sound had come from somewhere else. But how many people, in Raccoon City, would moan like that?
