Aoyagi Ritsuka found his life to be a study of contrasts. He loved his mother, yet in a way he hated her for all the suffering she put him through. He has an absentee father who according to society's standards has made sure that his family is very secure at least financially. He had a brother who he believed cared for and loved him, but according to everyone else his brother is a psychopathic monster who was a bit too much like their mother.
Finally, there is his fighter, protector and maybe someday lover. Agatsuma Soubi. This man who tells Ritsuka that he loves him. This man who says he will always be there for him no matter what. This man who tells him to just call him, and he will always answer no matter where he is or what he is doing. Ritsuka at times finds it hard to believe him and sometimes wants to believe everything Soubi tells him is the truth because just like everyone else Ritsuka wants to be loved and cherished, but Ritsuka is a study of contrasts himself and rejects what he desperately wants from Soubi.
So every time Soubi tells Ritsuka he loves him, Ritsuka says he lies. When Soubi says he will be there for Ritsuka, Ritsuka does not believe him. Every single time Ritsuka calls Soubi, and Soubi does not answer Ritsuka finds his rejection of his own wants justified.
