In vino veritas

They usually drink when the children are asleep, sometimes it's sake, sometimes it's beer – it depends on what world they're in, but as long as it's alcohol, they don't complain.

And in their drinking, Kurogane looks across at Fye and wonders if the drink loosens the knots in his heart and mind, allowing him to speak the truth about who he really is, to finally allow someone to draw close.

Then Fye takes a swig from his bottle, smiles and says something inane. Stupid.

There is no truth in wine, only lies when it comes to Fye. The lies that protect him from further pain, and keep those around him from seeing the broken shards of self.

Kurogane still drinks. And he invites Fye to drink his life-giving blood, even when he downs yet another bottle of sake.

There is truth in wine, only truth when it comes to Kurogane. The truth that keeps him going on – that he cares for Fye, he wants Fye to keep on living and believes that there is hope and strength in him to overcome the burdens he bears. And that he is tired of the lies that Fye tells him because he knows they both deserve better.
