Author's Notes: This was written for my short story assignment for Halloween. It's incredibly short, but I think it came out nicely. Read, please, and enjoy.
A Flicker of Gold
I walked through the misty, gray evening, holding my little pumpkin bag in my hand. My white gown floated over the sidewalk as my steps took me further towards the two-story house with only candles lighting the way. A glowing jack-o-lantern was positioned at the very corner of the cement porch to represent the night.
Halloween.
I didn't believe that you had to be a kid to go to different houses, begging for candy. I enjoyed trick-or-treating and no one was going to stop me from having an entertaining evening with my four best friends. With our thin, little heels clacking like obnoxious instruments against the walkway, we approached the door. Taking a breath, I lifted my fist before loudly knocking on the wood.
Nothing happened.
"Um, is there anyone even home?" my one friend asked, looking anxiously around the empty yard. A breeze passed through the trees, sending a rattling sound to our ears. Her pale blue pixie skirt fluttered around her bare legs.
"Does it look like anyone's home, Amy?" Lita asked sharply, glaring at the door while crossing her thick arms over her Amazon warrior-clad chest. "I want my candy."
"We can always try the next house," my blonde friend, Mina, spoke up with a cheerful chipper in her musical voice. She brushed the golden skirt of her flapper costume, causing a few golden sparkles to rub onto her hand.
"Don't be such a blonde, Mina. This is the last house on the street." Raye said before turning around, her knee high leather boots making a twisting sound on the wood.
"Guys, don't act like this is such a crisis. We can just go to the next town. We've already cleaned this one dry anyway," I said with a small smile. At their nods, I lifted the thin white skirt of my gown before walking down the wooden steps. Just as my heel was about to make contact with the walk again, a piercing scream filled with horror came from inside the house. My friends followed the sudden noise with a scream of their own before bolting as if the devil himself was on their feet and before long they had ran down the road.
Twisting my body back towards the house, I watched the scene as if it was in slow motion. A man dressed in slick, black pants and a matching black, button down shirt came rushing out of the house. The wind licked his shimmering black hair wildly, and his mouth hung open, gasping for air. His eyes caught mine, and even with the horror written clearly on his face, I could have sworn I saw a flicker of gold in those midnight blue depths before he had vanished. The wind howled, sweeping a scent of roses and spices up into the air, making me wonder who exactly I saw that Halloween night.
Then, an ancient name filled my mind as if it could have been spelled out in front of me, drifting silently through the courses of my thoughts.
Endymion.
A part of me feels like this should be the end, but then the other parts is screaming to add more. I think I will put this OneShot in the bin of stories that I wish to expand when I have the chance unless there is an unremarkable demand for more. Till then, however, I hope you liked this brief glimpse into my Sailor Moon world and will come again soon.
As for my other stories, I am mainly focusing on my newest story "Misery is Love". It has two completed chapters and a nearing-end of a third. I think I might start posting soon. If you want to read the summary and comment later, it is on my profile! Keep watch for its posting!
