He gazed endlessly at the horizon as the rising sun stung his eyes. Clutched tightly in his hand he held what was left of the Princess Mermaid. A large pearl and a beautiful scale. Though they were simple things they now held a meaning deeper than words could express. Reminants of a creature far more beautiful than anyone he had ever seen. She had been his true hero from that night he had almost lost his life to the sea.
A thin layer of foam began to form in tale the ship left behind in the sea as it began it's journey home with his new bride.

"Princess Mermaid." He whispered as tears collected in the corner of his eyes.

'How foolish of me!' He thought to himself as he remembered all the wonderful times he had shared with the mute beauty. The way she smiled so innocently. The way her bright blue eyes filled with joy when she looked at him. The way she played so beautifully when her fingertips brushed the harp strings.

"What have I done?" The prince lowered his head and began to weep. After he had cried all the tears his eyes would allow, he once again peered in to his trembling hands at the beautiful pearl. If only he hadn't been tricked by his parents she could still have lived. Perhaps if he had insisted she had stayed behind while he went on to see his mother, she would still be alive.

'Oh my Princess,' He thought to himself. 'Forgive me'

As he turned his back to the sea he closed his eyes and imagined the beautiful blond before him. How her angelic face was always warm and kind. There came a sound from behind him in the sea that broke his heart even more. A long and sorrowful cry of a dolphin as if it had been deprieved of everything it held dear.
Finally after what seemed like hours he opened his eyes and gazed upon his ship. He imagined his new bride would be awakening soon and they would continue on with their honeymoon as if nothing had happened. As if he had never met the girl.

"No!" He scolded himself. 'I will not let you go, my princess'

Once again he returned to the spot where he had first discovered her small belongings. Lifting himself up upon the railing he looked back at the window that had belonged to his room. 'Farewell my bride.' He thought to himself. 'Please do not weep for me.'

Returning his gaze upon the sea he no longer felt sorrow that had overcome him when he realized the truth. There in the tiny waves cast out by the ship he imagined her open arms waiting to greet him. He could hear her song in the wind. As if it too had become haunted by her memory.

Alas he cried with all his might, "PRINCESS MERMAID!!" before casting his soul in to the depths of the sea. As his body slowly descended in to the darkened abyss he allowed the last of his breath to escape his lips. His ears began to ring madly at first but were quickly reassurred with the most beautiful voice he had ever heard. A soft voice, a beautiful voice cooing in the waves as if the water were air and he were floating in the breeze. There came a light, a faint light from far away. The light quickly grew near and with it arrived his heaven. His Princess Mermaid.
