"Sam, what's wrong?"

Sam looked up to see her CO standing over her.

"Sir, you can't be in here, this is the woman's locker room."

"It's fine, there's no one else in here. Are you going to answer my question?"

"It's nothing, Sir, I'll be fine."

"It doesn't look like nothing."

"With all due respect Sir, it's none of your business."

General O'Neill took a step back, looking slightly hurt, before sitting down next to her.

"As your CO I need to know if there's a problem that could affect your work, but I'm also meant to be your friend. Sam, please tell me what's wrong," said the General, impressing even himself with his diplomacy skills.

Sam turned to look at her CO and tried to pull herself together, O'Neill was right; she couldn't let her emotions affect her work.

"Well, Sir," she paused, wondering whether she really wanted to tell her CO, friend or not. It was times like these that she missed Janet the worst; this is the type of thing they confided in each other. She took a deep breath, "Pete and I broke up."

O'Neill stared at her for a second, and couldn't help but feel his heart sore slightly. "Why?" he asked, unsure of what he was supposed to say to her.

"Well, he couldn't cope with not knowing what I was doing all the time, with not being able to answer his every question. In the end we both agreed breaking up was the best thing to do…but it doesn't stop me missing him." Now that she was calming down she realised what a mess she must look.

As if he read her mind, Jack handed her a tissue, realising how useless he was at this 'girlie' stuff. "Here," he said, feeling totally inadequate.

Sam smiled at him, "Thanks, Sir."

"That's ok. Shit, I'd better get going, I'll see you in the briefing room in half an hour," he said, getting up and heading towards the door.

"Sir," said Sam, just as he reached the door, "thanks for listening."

"What are friends for?" and with that, he left.

Later that evening, Sam heard a knock at her front door. Sighing she got up, leaving her microwave meal for one.

"Sir," she said, surprised to see her CO at her front door, "Hi."

"Are you going to let me in Carter? It's freezing out here."

"Oh, sorry Sir, come in," Sam frowned at the small cardboard box her CO was carrying.

Noticing this, Jack answered the question before she asked it, "I bought you a present, to try and cheer you up," he put the box down on the island in the middle of her kitchen, next to her phone.

Frowning even harder, Sam moved towards the box; it sounded like something was moving inside it. Cautiously she opened the lid, and let out a gasp as the small, triangular, tabby head of a kitten popped out of the top.

"It's gorgeous, Sir," she said, her face lighting up.

Jack smiled, blushing slightly, which just made Carter laugh harder. She picked the tiny kitten up and it instantly curled up in her arms and started purring loudly.

"Her name is Millie," Sam's CO informed her.

"Thank you, Sir."

"My pleasure," he answered, smiling.
