Author's Note: I know that Numair and Daine are lovers up to Trickster's Choice (which I'm currently reading – it is really slow, but good) but I this'll be my little version of how things went down between them. I may write the wedding, may not. For now, enjoy. Takes place four years after RotG.
Mage & Magelet
Rain drenched both of their clothes as they dashed into the cave, Daine guiding Cloud, Numair leading Mangle – Spots hot on their trail, tail wagging in excitement. They had gotten caught in a winter storm on their way back from Cría returning from a mission given to the both of them by the King and Queen of Tortall.
Daine cursed as she rolled the edges of her shirt and wringed out the soaking cloth, water dripping to the ground to form a good sized puddle. "Of all the places for them to send us to it had to be Cría, in the middle of winter," Daine grumbled.
Numair laughed. "I'm just glad we were able to find shelter before it began snowing," he remarked, setting up a fire for the both of them so they could warm up. He too was drenched from the rain were their two horses.
Once a smolder began to burn into a fire Daine walked over to Cloud. Right now, Daine needed something to occupy her or annoy her, to keep her mind of her nearing birthday.
You're anxious, Cloud said to her, and not just about the storm. It's your birthday, isn't it? Cloud asked her.
Daine shook her head and ran a hand through Cloud's mane, trying her hardest not to tense up at her pony's words. "What did she say?" Numair asked, now well used to the unspoken conversations between Daine and her pony.
Daine shrugged. "Just that she's annoyed about getting drenched from the rain," Daine answered sitting down next to Numair, the mage wrapping an arm around her shoulders.
I've been in worse, Cloud remarked; you're avoiding it – again.
Am not, Daine retorted meeting Cloud's gaze, I'm not avoiding anything, she thought defiantly to the pony.
I don't know what you're afraid of, Cloud shrugged, you might as well be married – you act like it.
Daine stiffened at her pony's words, I am not afraid, she said to Cloud finally. The pony neighed in a sigh.
Numair, who hadn't heard any of the conversation between Daine and Cloud looked between the two. "Are you going to translate or should I ask?" Numair said with amusement, a smile on his face.
Daine relaxed at his words. "Cloud was just being, Cloud," she smiled up at him, her face close to his.
Daine remembered what Cloud had said – in a moment she kissing Numair, who gladly returned the action, gently pulling her into his lap.
Cradling her as they continued to kiss Numair pulled back first. Their faces were still close; Numair could see that Daine didn't want to stop. He smiled at her, taking in the moment before he asked for the first time in two years.
"Will you marry me?" Numair had asked before, and Daine's answer had been the same: Maybe someday. He didn't expect it to be any different – he would wait a lifetime for Daine to say yes. But this time his heart was beating fast in his chest.
Daine smiled and pulled his face to hers, feeling that delightful shock race through her body as she kissed him. I'm not afraid, not anymore, Daine thought, hoping Cloud would hear her.
"Yes," she replied.
Took you long enough, Cloud thought both happy and relieved to hear her friend's answer to the stork man's question.
Daine let out a soft laugh when she heard Cloud's thoughts. Numair eyed her, his eyes filled with humour.
"Cloud just being Cloud, again?" He asked.
Daine answered by giving him another kiss.
Author's Note: Like? I know it's short, but I may write more if inspiration comes cough reviews? cough. Anyway, I hope you like.
