Part One
Relena Peacecraft/Darlian stood at the corner, staring at a sign. There was nothing weird about the sign; it simply read Canary Road. And that wasn't weird at all. It was a street sign. But Relena thought it was weird. She hadn't wanted to come to this street. She had never heard of it before. Almost as if there was a magnetic force pulling her, she had turned on purpose - but for what reason, she had no idea - and had found this street. Now she didn't know where else to go. The magnetic force had stopped. She knew how to get back, of course, but there was something in her that wanted to keep going, to see why she had come.
It was a normal evening on L1. Nobody else was staring at road signs; they had better things to do. But Relena had come to the colony for a meeting, and the meeting wasn't for two days. She had plenty of time to explore. Pagan, the trusty old butler, knew what she was doing. He also knew that it was dangerous for the former queen to gallivant around, but there was no stopping her, so he remained silent.
The colony had already turned off its lights, except for just enough to seem as if the moon and stars were out.
Relena stepped around the corner and walked until she was standing in front of a shiny apartment building. Frowning, she wondered what exactly she was doing here. Then a name flitted through her mind, ever so softly, like a ghost crossing a threshold. Heero. It was a name she had forbidden herself from uttering out loud, on days she found it repeating itself in her mind. She was eighteen and completely convinced that he was just a school girl crush. She didn't love him, couldn't love him. Still, whenever he crossed her mind, she felt her heart wrench and her mind whirl and his name would begin to creep back onto her tongue, like a song waiting to be sung. The memory of him, unconscious in her arms, was enough to fill her with a certain, indescribable, warmth, a feeling she could never remember having before. Swallowing it down was always hard, but it was something she had to do, she didn't want to complicate things. Why, how, or what it would complicate, she didn't know. And then she realized it; she was afraid.
Sighing, Relena decided that she had to face him. She let her feet guide her into the building and into the elevator, where she mechanically pushed the numbers. At level ten, she got off the elevator, walked slowly down the hall, and stopped in front of apartment number 819. Is this where he lives? Relena stood at the door for a while, biting her lip, wondering if she was brave enough to ring the doorbell, wondering if she was even at the right place. Gathering all her courage, she pushed the little cream colored button and listened to the muffled sound of the bell from within the apartment. About two minutes later, the door opened part way, and she saw Heero, standing there in his green tank top and a pair of black sweats, rubbing his eyes. His wild hair was even more unkempt than usual.
"Relena?" he said sleepily.
"Did I wake you up?" she asked. No, what makes me think that? Please don't close the door.
"It's midnight." Heero replied, his curiosity hidden beneath the short, emotionless response.
Relena looked at her watch. "I'm sorry. I'm not used to the time change yet." She glanced up at him, wondering what he was thinking, if he was angry, if he wanted her to leave.
"Oh." Heero opened the door wider, as if debating whether to let her in or not. "What are you doing here?"
"I don't know."
He looked at her for a second, turning this phrase over in his mind, curious, but not wanting to show it. It was so easy to hide things like that behind his training, but it was hard to hide the expression that liked sneaking into his eyes whenever she was around. However, he choked his feelings down yet again. Not sure of what else to do, Heero made the same decision he had made many times before. "You should go," he said quietly. In all reality, he just wanted her to stand there, wanted to look at her, wanted to -and he hated himself for this- to hold her. She was beautiful.
Choking down disappointment, Relena nodded, turned around, walked slowly down the otherwise empty hall, and stared at the dark flowered patterns in the carpet. She had expected it. Why was she so disappointed? It didn't make sense. Sighing, she stepped back onto the elevator, and dismally pushed "ground level." When the elevator doors slid shut, she felt a single tear slide down her cheek, and frantically brushed it away, angry with herself for being so weak.
Heero still stood in his doorway, the door partially open. He had watched her go down the hall, head down, and step into the elevator. She had looked sad. If he hurt her in any way, he knew he would never be able to forgive himself. With a slight frown etching itself across his face, he closed the door and walked slowly back to his room. Comforted by the darkness, he plopped back into bed, although he didn't fall asleep until the colony started to turn the lights back on in the morning.
Relena's butler opened the door to her apartment across town almost half an hour later. "Miss Relena," he said. "You've been out all night. I was beginning to worry." The old man smiled.
"Hello Pagan." Relena said, not as cheerfully as she had meant to.
"Is something wrong, Miss?"
"No Pagan, everything is fine. I just need to go to bed, that's all."
The old butler nodded, but didn't seem to quite believe her. However, he didn't say anything. It wasn't a good time to say anything.
Relena walked slowly into her bedroom, changed into light blue pajamas, brushed her teeth, and climbed into bed. For a while, she just lay there, staring blankly at the ceiling, Heero's voice playing through her mind. "I will kill you." "Mission accepted." "You're in the way, get lost!" "It's your country." "You don't understand." "Hn." An image of Heero's Prussian blue eyes flowed through her mind, and she fell asleep.
