Hermione sees an owl carrying a letter and wonders why. The owl flies to her and hoots, Hermione takes the letter.
"What is Hogwarts?" She wondered "Mum I have a letter which was sent by owl, Do you want to read it?
"I am coming" Mum said "what a weird way of sending post, lets see what it says."
The letter said
Congratulations, You have been accepted into Hogwarts. You need to go to platform 9 3/4 On the 31st August. In this letter there is a list saying what you need at Hogwarts which you can get from Diagon Alley.

Remember 1st years are not allowed their own broom
