~Dreams discover reality~

She appears in my dreams, in the dark, a beautiful, sad little thing. Unreal, a fantasy. Strange. I see that face every day, sunny and smiling. Yet she looks so different at night, a mere shadow, hardly even there. She moves about aimlessly, eyes lowered, nowhere to go. She looks so cold, so afraid, lost in the emptiness. I want to hold her, warm her, comfort her. I try to take her in my arms but she slips from my grasp. Like smoke, she vanishes into the darkness.

"Good morning, Hiiragizawa-kun!" Sakura called out cheerfully when she spotted her friend walking down the hall.

"Good morning, Kinomoto-san." Eriol greeted absently, preoccupied with his thoughts.

"Are you alright? You seem worried."

"Oh, sorry. I'm alright. I was just thinking about this dream I had last night ..."

Just then, Tomoyo arrived. While the two girls enthusiastically exchanged greetings, Eriol quietly observed the new arrival. Tomoyo Daidouji was the most mysterious girl he had ever met. Though outwardly she appeared calm, composed and happy, he wondered if it was just a veil, concealing her true nature. And the dream nagged endlessly on his mind. Who was Tomoyo Daidouji? He was not even sure she could answer that question.

"Hiiragizawa-kun?"

Eriol snapped out of his reverie. Sakura was gone, and Tomoyo was looking at him with a puzzled expression. "Yes, Daidouji-san?"

"Can you stay back after school to do research for the project? We'll be researching in the library today."

"Of course. Are Kinomoto-san and Li-kun also coming?"

"Sakura-chan can't make it today. She just went to find Li-kun to ask him if he can come."

Eriol acknowledged that with a nod and looked as if he was about to fall into reverie again. Tomoyo quickly reminded him that they had to get to class. They started down the hall, and Tomoyo stole a glance at Eriol. She had never really noticed him before, but she saw him now. He was a strange boy. Always so suave and charming, but was there anything beneath that? When she looked into his dark blue eyes, she could see all the loneliness, the sadness, the uncertainty of her soul living in his eyes. Could she? Did he really feel that way, or was it only a reflection, a dream, a fantasy? Will she ever know?

She comes again. She stands still now, and looks at me, her eyes looking deep into mine. I think she sees through me, right into my heart, penetrating my deepest feelings. How can she do that? How can she break with once glance all these barriers that I have so carefully set up around me over the years? I feel naked, exposed under her gaze. Yes, I am afraid. Yet I know she will not harm me. I know, and I know why she sees me, truly me. It is because her soul and mine are one and the same. She knows me, better than anyone else in the world, and in the same way, I know her. We are each other.

Their eyes met at once, halfway across the crowded cafeteria. They were so sensitive to each other's presence, each other's feelings, each other's thoughts that no words were necessary. Just one look communicated everything. They knew that they had once been lost, but now, as they found each other, they found themselves. They were complete, no longer simply fantasies. They were whole, healed by love.
