A/N: I'm getting back into the HG swing of things. I wrote this after I read Mockingjay for the... fourth time, maybe? Angst. Lots of it. Enjoy!
He's in the hallway when he gets the news directly from her mother. The news he never thought that he'd hear. The news that he had always dreaded.
"She's gone, Rory."
"What do you mean, she's gone? She's coming back."
…No, Rory. She won't."
"What are you saying?"
Her mother took a deep breath.
"There was an accident. Involving children and medics. She couldn't be saved."
His mind is racing, trying to outrun his pulse. "What kind of accident?"
She takes a deep breath. "There was a set of parachuting delayed double-fire explosives that simply landed in the wrong place."
He falls to his knees. He knows those bombs.
"She was trying to help the already wounded kids. She was-"
"NO!" he screams. "NO, SHE'S NOT DEAD."
Her mother doesn't even flinch, although he can hear the sadness in her voice.
"I'm so sorry, Rory."
His face is in his hands. "No, no, no, no…"
He isn't even aware of Nurse Everdeen leaving him there. The next thing that he knows, an all-too-familiar arm finds its way around his shoulders.
"You heard?"
He looks up at Gale with anger building. "It was your idea."
Gale tries to explain. "No, Rory-"
But he shoves Gale off of him and gets to his feet.
"You helped make them! You showed me how they would work!"
Gale puts his hands up, beginning to say something.
"You told me she wouldn't get hurt."
He takes off running, through the sterile white walls, around endless corners, silently calling to her.
Prim? Prim, where are you? Prim?
He runs until he runs out of hallway.
She's gone.
He punches the concrete wall, splitting his knuckles open.
She's gone.
He slides to the ground.
She's gone.
He feels the tears begin to fall, sees the dark spots on his pant legs.
She's gone.
