Encounter

The village was quiet, peaceful, almost. The moon shone above with a striking radiance, but there were hardly any stars adorning the sky. Around them, hanging lanterns gave off weak light, the flames within gray and flickering.

The two sisters wandered aimlessly, their footfalls accompanied only by their heavy breathing. What was this place, secluded and isolated deep within the forest? Despite the quaint nature of the olden style, the air was oppressive and threatening. The village seemed abandoned, but Mio could not help but feel that they were not alone.

Mayu walked beside her, limping. She had seemed almost in a daze before, following the mysterious butterflies that had fluttered before them. Now they were gone, having vanished into this enigmatic place. They approached a large, derelict house. Something floated on the wind towards them—was it a laugh, a moan, a fleeting whisper?

Mio made to open the door and enter, but she hesitated. What could be waiting within? Suddenly there was a presence on her shoulder, light, like a hand. It slithered over and down into her bosom. Blushing, she touched the hand and brushed it away. This was no time for fun. "Not right now, Mayu," she giggled, trying to remain of her wits.

But Mayu was some feet away, already passing her towards the house. Mio stared at her, the recent color draining from her cheeks. Her blood cold and her heart drumming, she looked back and saw no one there.
