Alya has been in hiding for a year. But when her brother's friend shows up at her door and demands she come back to England - and her husband- she has to chose between the life she wants, and the life that is best for the wizarding world. Takes place during the sixth book.
Sitting at the kitchen table in the early morning, warming my hands with my coffee mug, I attempted to read the newspaper, but my mind kept drifting. I had to be at work by nine, and I wasn't looking forward to it. Don't get me wrong - I was glad I had gotten a job - I had spent six months unemployed after being laid off at Christmas. Thank Merlin I had friends who let Carina, Merak, and I stay with them until I could get back on my feet.
And as if, just by thinking about my children, I had called them, Merak began to cry from the bedroom. I groaned, longing to bang my head against the table, but I rose, heading to the back of the house. My son was standing in his crib. When he saw me, he immediately stopped crying and was all smiles. I had to smile back at him as I picked him up. "Good morning baby," I whispered, so not to wake up Carina. I felt his diaper, noticing he was wet, and I sighed. I laid him down, changed him, and picked him back up just as a knock sounded through the house. I straightened, puzzled, and walked out to the door, still holding Merak, and opened it. Remus Lupin stood on my doorstep, holding a bag over his head to shield himself from the rain.
I shifted my son to my other hip. "Remus," I said coldly. "What brings you here? How did you find me?"
"May I come in?" the man said tiredly. I shook my head.
"No, you may not. Say what you came to say then get the hell out of my life."
"Fine." He paused. "Alya, it wasn't hard to find you. I know you. I knew you'd come back to this town. Or at least I had hoped you would. I asked around, looking for a young mother with two children - "
"Why are you here?" I interrupted. "I told you and Sirius both that - "
"Sirius is dead," Remus said, stopping me from continuing. "He died last month."
"You're lying," I said automatically. "Dumbledore would've-"
"Dumbledore has other things to do. He's the head of the Order of the Phoenix, or have you forgotten?" Remus paused. "Alya. Sirius wanted you to come back. He wanted to know his niece and nephew more than anything, but you didn't give him the chance."
I avoided his eyes, looking down at my son. "Remus," I said finally. "Why do you want me to come back so badly? The Order doesn't need me, they have Severus-"
"Who cannot keep spying alone. Voldemort isn't happy with Snape right now, he needs help. You are the best person. With the exception of your brother, your entire family is with him."
"I have my children to think about, Remus, something neither you or Sirius understand," I said coldly. "I have to think about them."
"What about your husband? Severus needs you. You can't keep hiding out here forever."
"Yes, I can," I told him. "At least until the war is over. Goodbye, Remus." And I shut the door in his face.
This is just the beginning. I'm planning on continuing it, if enough people want to read it, so let me know if you want me to continue!
