A/N: May is the month of Mental Health Awareness; the perfect time to help fight against the mental illness stigma. I can't remember if Luna enjoyed painting in the books, but it just seemed like something she'd be good at. I don't really write poems that much, so I hope you like it!

Disclaimer: I don't own Harry Potter.

Standing in the Sun:

They abandoned her.

They didn't understand her,

No one could unless they experienced it firsthand.

Art became her solace,

Her only companion.

Jagged brushstrokes mark the page,

Dark grey and black collide,

Arcs of yellow come sweeping down,

Like storm lighting in the night sky.

-O-

She sits in the sunlight for hours,

Absorbing solar energy like a sponge,

Recording the feeling of happiness in her mind,

Painting a million pictures of the sun.

Yet every time when winter comes,

And darkness smothers the Earth,

She feels hopelessness stir inside,

And depression wraps its claws around her.

Blue and white swirl and mix,

Dancing around the page,

Starbursts of silver are scattered about,

Grey clouds on a beautiful day.

-O-

She likes to think that she's a tree,

And each mocking 'weirdo',

Is a gust of wind,

Trying to blow her down.

Her branches may bend,

But they remain unbowed.

It's the nice ones that get her,

The ones who ask if she wants any help.

Everyone faces humiliation,

It's the little things that sets her apart.

She may have seasonal affective disorder,

But that doesn't mean she's broken.

Like liquid fire in a radiant sun,

Orange courses across the page,

Filling in the empty penciled outlines,

Racing over her previous mistakes.

-O-

Her painting is finished in winter,

But standing in the solarium,

It doesn't feel like it's the end.

It feels like dawn.

Her work will never be in a museum,

It will never win an award,

But it is far greater than any masterpiece,

For it is the story,

The depiction of her soul.

A/N: Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a real mental condition and is one of the many types of depression. If you're interested in learning about it, Mayo Clint and NAMI have some informative articles. Any comments or constructive criticism is greatly appreciated! Thanks for reading!
