He dropped a penny into the well, peering over and watching the ripples it
made. The almost black water shone in the moonlight, and as he watched
another coin plopped in. He looked up, and found himself staring into the
eyes of the very person he'd been trying to avoid...
"Rei..." She murmured, dropping another penny as she turned away from him.
"You know that wishes you make on pennies dropped in wells never come true, right?" Rei stated, a half-smile on his lips. "That's what falling stars are for..."
She turned to him, arms crossed. "Then why are you out here at three in the morning, dropping all of your loose change in one?"
He didn't answer, but sighed, and craned his head to look at the stars.
"You see that constellation? It contains Sirius, the brightest star in the sky..." He said softly, pointing heavenwards.
She cocked her head to one side, confused... what was he talking about?
"I wanted to see the ripples in the moonlight..." He added, turning to her, a sardonic smile on his lips. "Never knew I was going to turn all poetic, did you?" He added, picking the smallest pebble off the ground and dropping it in also, watching the disturbance it made.
"The smallest can be the most deadly..." She added, looking him in the eye. "I can be poetic too, you know. However, I don't generally feel the urge to do it in the small hours when I should be sleeping..."
He raised an eyebrow, and tugged at a strand of her hair. "You should. The moonlight is very becoming on you."
She laughed, and then gazed down at the now almost gone ripples. "We're battling each other tomorrow, my team's going to kill me you know."
He raised an eyebrow, then sat down on the grass heavily. " Mine too. I might as well give them something to kill me for." With this, he pulled a small bag off his back, and unrolled a small sleeping bag.
"You're mad, sleeping outside is insane!"
"The stars are out tonight." He replied cryptically, tugging on her pajama trousers. She crouched down and ran a hand through his hair, amused by his expression. He was obviously shattered.
"Night Rei. Beat you in the morning." She yawned, getting up and starting to walk away.
"The stars say not, my friend," He retorted, repressing a yawn of his own as he wriggled into his sleeping bag.
She just chuckled, and waved to him before going inside. Who knew Rei of all people could be so poetic? She thought, as she crawled back under her crumpled duvet.
"I hope the stars keep a good watch on you..." She muttered, half asleep already. In the morning, he was hers. In more ways than one, she hoped at least.
