"Edward," A voice said. "Son…"
The young boy awoke to his father's call, the big man shaking him gently.
He sat up, groggy and confused.
"Come on, Edward. There's someone I want you to meet."
Edward followed his father through the halls, rubbing his eyes and yawning loudly. What did his father want him for? It was way past his bedtime. He shouldn't have been up at this hour. His mother would scold him for this. And where was she anyway?
He continued to walk, thinking these sleepy thoughts, until his father stopped in front of the master bedroom.
Now Edward was extremely confused. He was never allowed to enter his parents room. Ever.
But despite the strict rule, his father opened the big door and ushered him in.
His mummy was lying on the huge bed, propped up by pillows. She smiled at him and he felt himself relax. So he wasn't in trouble.
His father lifted him onto the bed and placed him beside his mother. He looked at her for a moment. Edward had never seen his mother look so weak. She was a strong, confident woman, who he had never once seen tired. But right now she looked exhausted. That scared him.
But her smile was strong and true.
His father placed a heavy hand on his shoulder, grinning down at him. "Congratulations, Son. You're a big brother."
Edward's eyes widened. A big brother? So that meant…
He noticed the bundle of blankets in his mother's arms.
He didn't know what to feel. Being an only child, he couldn't imagine having a sibling. And wasn't sure he wanted one.
He knew his mother was pregnant, but didn't imagine she would give birth so soon. He was so weirded out about the whole thing, like when his mummy made him feel her tummy for the kicking baby.
Would his parents like this child better than him? Would they not pay him any attention anymore? Perhaps this baby would get all his toys. He didn't like this at all.
"Would you like to hold the baby?" His mother asked, oddly gentle at the moment.
He was hesitant, to say the least. But when she placed the babe in his lap, something else washed over him entirely.
In the bundle of blankets was a sleeping baby. It was so warm and heavy and soft and cute.
"Say hello to Elizabeth." His mother whispered.
He stared. This baby, this little human was his brand new sister. She looked so peaceful, sleeping like an angel. She was perfect. Her little fingers curled into miniature fists, her closed eyelids, her tiny blonde head. All of it was perfect. A little baby sister of his very own.
And right away any previous worry had vanished.
Even though she was asleep and doing nothing, she seemed to shine. Like a star or the sun. A little ray of sunshine. So precious, so innocent.
He decided he would have to be the best big brother ever. To protect this child and to make sure this bright, perfect light would never fade.
Elizabeth. His brand new sunshine.
He would protect her, forever.
