The Yearly 365 Challenge
Prompt #349 (Food) Ice-Cream
Betty shook her head in annoyance. "I can not believe you Chic." She stared across the table at her brother.
Chic shrugged. "Oh come Betty it is pretty funny."
"Feeding infants ice cream is not funny Chic." Betty frowned.
"They are over six months old now Betty. They are old enough to try a little ice cream." Chic sighed. "I read it in a book."
"What a comic book." Betty's right eye brow rose.
"I'm their mother and I'm not this upset with Chic's little stunt." Polly rested her right hand on her sister's stiff shoulder. "Let it go. It's not worth having this as yet another reason to hold a grudge against our brother." She said softly so Chic couldn't hear. She felt Betty tighten up. "Ease up Betty; he's trying."
Betty's eyes lowered to the table.
"Hey I was wondering if you wouldn't mind having a roommate Pol?" Chic spoke up.
Betty's eyes slammed up. "I see so you are going to abandoned me yet again; only this time I will be alone in that house with mom." She snared looking into his eyes.
Chic's eyes widen.
"Chic isn't going to move out of the house until you do Betty." Polly spoke her own eyes glued onto her brother's ones. "Isn't that right Chic Cooper?!" She demanded in a hard voice.
"I won't leave that house without you Betty. I promise." He looked into his baby sister's eyes.
Betty emotionally shut down. She stood to her feet. "I can't be here any longer." She turned her eyes onto her sister's. "I'm sorry Pol. But I can't be here right now."
Polly stood to her feet. She wrapped her arms around her sister, and pulled her in. "It's going to take time and a lot of trust to rebuild. But it will get better I promise you." She said as she craddled her sister's head agasinst her neck.
Betty pulled away. "I just need to get out of here." She backed away from the dining room table; "Tell the twins that I love them." She turned and fled towards the front door.
Polly sat back down just as the door shut behind her baby sister.
Chic bowed his head. "I'm sorry that I messed up Pol."
Polly sighed deeply. "You are the one whom have distanced yourself from her even before you left home the day that you graduated Chic." Her eyes met her brother's. "Why didn't you want to help and protect Betty when we were younger. You fine up to when she turned six and started to go to school full time." Her shoulders tightened. "Why did you take that away from her."
"I know that I messed up big time sis." Chic spoke in a broken voice. "I was never strong as you were Pol …. I always knew that I wasn't strong enough to protect Betty from the on slaughter that was our mother Alice Smith Cooper." He bit his bottom lip as his fists clenched on the table.
