At 14 weeks old, the new baby and her new family were finally starting to find a daily rhythm that seemed to work for everyone. Emily had been back to work for 2 weeks, and Matt was still trying his hardest to get work hours that would allow him to spend as much time as possible with his new wife and daughter. It was hard, but they were all working things out. They loved their new life, the three of them together. They had moved into a beautiful apartment, large enough for the three of them, six months ago, and although Emily still missed the privacy and full nights of sleep she had gotten at here old apartment, the new one felt just right, just like what a home was supposed to feel like. She didn't even mind the extra laundry and one in the morning wakeup calls, she knew that was how it was supposed to be; how she had always wanted it. And for the fist time in his life, Matt didn't mind having his bathroom cluttered with diapers, make up, onesies and tampons. Everyone was tired and stressed, but it was still just so peaceful, like things had finally worked out the way they always should have.
It was 9 am on a normal Tuesday morning for the new family. Emily had gone into work early to finish up some paperwork forms from the day before, and Matt had just walked in to the office after dropping Kayla off at the daycare a few blocks away. Although covered in a spit up stain, and without his normal morning coffee, Matt still had a new confidence about him. One that told everyone around him how happy he was to be a father. Matt got of the elevator and walked over to where he found Emily sitting typing up some notes.
"Hey Honey," she said as he walked up behind her and kissed her on the crown of her head.
"Hey" responded Matt looking at what Emily had been typing.
"Did Kayla get off to Daycare ok?" asked Emily as she swiveled her chair around to face her husband.
"She's doing great. Had a hard time with the handoff though." He replied as Emily dabbed at the mild stain on his shirt with a paper towel.
"Did you remember her pacifier and bottle?" Questioned Emily.
"Yeah, and her blanket too." Matt reassured Emily as he placed a hand on her shoulder. Emily still wasn't quite used to being at work and leaving her daughter at a daycare. For the last few days she had been going to visit Kayla at every brake she had and calling to check up on her whenever she couldn't visit.
"Lehman, Flannery, do you have a second?" Interrupted Cheryl as she walked up to their combined cubical.
"Yeah, sure," responded Emily as she turned to face her boss.
"What's going on?" added Matt.
"We just got word of a possible hostage situation down at DCSF. It seems some lady who gave birth 4 days ago and had her child taken away after both tested positive for alcohol and drugs has come back to try to get her baby. She's got a gun and is intoxicated and high. As far as we know there are five case workers, including hers still in the building. She let everyone else go."
Matt sighed in terror as Cheryl continued on.
"Are you guys okay to take this one? Emily, I totally understand if your not ready for this kind of a situation yet, and you too Matt. Having a child changes everything, and I don't know if this case is too close to you guys right now. Its also a 45 minute helicopter ride away."
At first both had been eager for the chance to get out of the office and to a real negotiation, but 45 minutes, that was a lot. They talked it out for a while, but they finally decided to go for it. Cheryl promised that she would fly one of them at least back in time to get Kayla before the day care closed at 5pm.
Matt and Emily gathered up their stuff and headed out for the helipad.
