Prologue

The house looked like any other. It stood proud on the side of a
residential street; its stained glass windows beamed proudly, shining a
myriad of light onto the perfect green grass. If you listened closely, you
could almost hear the soft notes of a piano, the musical laughter of
flirtatious women.
The first floor was an unending party. For six days, people came and went
as they pleased, exchanging money for alcohol and alcohol for friends.
Then, for one day each week, the house closed, and, for that day, it was
nothing more than it seemed. For that day it was just a house where three
law abiding cousins laid their heads each night.
The cousins were not all that they seemed either though. No one questioned
the odd happenings though, because there was no place better than the
manor, and the girls had a tendency to throw out anyone who dared to play
twenty questions.
The first floor was open to anyone who found their way in, but the other
floors of the house were limited to those who had fought their way into the
girls' hearts, which was no small feat. Many tried, but still, only the
privileged few were allowed access to the girls' rooms, and even fewer
could travel up the back stairs, into the attic which held a greater secret
than anyone in the party could ever have guessed.
The cousins were special, more special than most people knew. They were
strongest witches the world had seen, though not the strongest that would
ever be. They didn't dwell on that, though, but marveled in their own
powers, using them for what they wanted and severing ties with those who
had other uses for them. They protected those who they dubbed were worthy.
They were called good by others of their kind, simply in fear of their
wrath. Really they were neither good nor bad. They fought for neither
side. They simply iwere/i. Their power was nothing, except an easy
mask to hide their illegal workings from the occasional police officer.
That was all their power was for. It was there to save them and anyone
else that they happened to save in the process was lucky.
It was only a matter of time before it caught up with them. That much
power just lying around? Who were they to think no one would come and try
to tame it, to capture it for their own? The questions wouldn't come until
later though, until someone had already been lost, and sides would have to
be taken.
