L knew right from the start that Light was Kira. He was going to catch Kira and put him to justice, but after spending time with Light, he realizes his feelings for Light.
He loves Light, but unfortunately he couldn't confess, because he knows Light will never return his feelings. So, he kept it a secret.
He pretended to assume Light was Kira, because if he actually catches him, he knows he probably would never see him again and at the same time Light would hate him, which is one of the things L really dreaded.
One day, he found out that Light was going to kill him.
On the day he was going to die, he was really happy, he spent his remaining time with Light. He washed Light's feet, massaging him as he did. He was sad, knowing that after today, he will never get to see Light again, even if it was just from a distance.
"...You're still wet." Light helped him dry his hair.
Now, L really wanted to cry. Why? Why is he showing concern? Why now...
"Sad, isn't it?"
"Huh?"
L smiled sadly. "It's nearly time to say goodbye."
He stared into Light's eyes, expression full of his feelings for Light. "I love you..." He wanted to say so badly, but couldn't. He so wanted to touch him, love him, say those very three words to the Light he loved, but couldn't. Sorrow was overwhelming him. The pain of not having Light loving him back, the pain of knowing that Light never even treating you as a friend hurts so much...
His phone rang. He was quite thankful for it; a while more and he would break down and cry. He answered the call. He hid his shaking voice perfectly well, for he the the world's greatest detective, as well as him being an expert at pretending...
"Shall we go, Light-kun?" He turned away from Light, not wanting him to see his pained expression. If he sees him the stabbing pain will just come back...
"Seems like things have gone well."
So? How? This is just an interpretation of what i saw during the time when L and Light went into the rain. When i watched this part in the anime i was seriously gonna cry ;_; Its just so sad D: R&R?
