It was New Year's Eve and it was cold. That's all Shino knew as he ventured into the streets of Konoha Village. He had been negligent; he hadn't gotten New Year's gifts for his teammates. His father had found out and gave him money- shooing him into the streets to get gifts. That was exactly how he ran into Kiba.
Shino guessed Kiba was in the same dilemma as he, because he was walking out of the Yamanaka Flower Shop. It was no surprise the shop was open, but the surprise was that Kiba was carrying a bouquet of flowers.
"Oh, hey Shino!" Kiba called.
The bug tamer had been spotted. He nodded his greetings as Kiba walked over, holding the flowers tightly.
"Kiba-kun… what are you doing out?" Shino asked. "Who are those for?"
"My mom sent me out to get gifts for you guys," Kiba replied.
He was in the same situation… but he didn't answer Shino's second question.
"-you?"
Shino blinked. Had Kiba spoken?
"What about you?" Kiba repeated.
"My father sent me out…"
"Ah…"
An air of awkwardness settled over them. Drunken men stumbled by, chasing after scantily clad women. Kiba laughed slightly, sending mist into Shino's face. It smelt… nice.
"So… who are those for?" Shino questioned again.
"They're…" He hesitated. "They're actually for you."
A blush was on his face as he held them out. Shino stared at them before taking them. What was going on?
"Ten!"
The countdown began and Shino looked away from Kiba to stare at the gathering crowd down the street.
"Nine!"
Shino listened as people cheered.
"Eight!"
Shino watched as premature fireworks lit the air.
"Seven!"
More fireworks and more cheering.
"Six!"
More people ran past to add onto the crowd.
"Five! Four! Three!"
Shino turned to face Kiba to wish him a happy New Year's but jumped when he noticed how close Kiba was.
"Two!"
Closer…
"One!"
And… contact.
"Happy New Year's!"
Shino felt his face heat up and he dropped the flowers.
"Kiba!"
Naruto- he always had to ruin things.
"Kiba!"
Kiba pulled away and turned, laughing nervously.
"Bad dog!" Naruto scolded, glaring at Kiba.
