If You Loved Me
An ANNIE Fanfiction
Summary: After being released from jail, Rooster is reunited with Lily, only to discover that she is married, though she insists that she still loves him. (Yes, that is a dreadful run-on sentence, but this is not english class.) Note to reviewers, I'm only open to CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. If you don't like my story, either tell me why or don't review. Thanks.
Disclaimer: These are not my characters, except for Reggie.
Part 1: The Lovers Meet Again
On his first day as a free man, Rooster Hannigan made his way down the streets of New York, seeking the address written on the crumpled piece of paper on his pants pocket. The old brick apartment building looked as if it could crumble at any moment. *My Lily is living in this slum?* he thought. He climbed the shabby stone steps into the stale-smelling lobby and ascended the staircase to find apartment number 211. He checked the piece of paper again to see that the address and number were correct. He chuckled, remembering the difficulty he'd had in extracting the information from his sister, who had never cared for Lily.
After knocking on the door, Rooster whipped out his comb, ran it through his hair and straightened his tie. The woman who answered the door was changed dramatically. Ten years had put lines in her face and gray in her hair. She seemed to be wearing no makeup, her hair was up in a tight bun, and her modest blue dress did little justice to her flawless figure. But in her eyes, he could still see traces of the angel he left behind.
"Rooster," she gasped. It was hardly the warm welcome he had expected. "Rooster," she said again, more quietly.
"Who is it, Lily?" A male voice came from another room.
"It's nobody, Reggie." she called back. "It's a salesman." To Rooster she said, "Let's talk out here." Taking his hand, she pulled him away from the door and into the hallway.
"A salesman, Lily?"
"I'm sorry..."
Who is that man?" he inquired.
"That— is my cousin Reggie. He's unemployed. He needs a place to stay." Lily put her arms around his neck and stared at him with those angelic eyes. "You believe me– don't you?"
"Why shouldn't I?" he asked, returning her stare. She looked away.
"I love you," she whispered sweetly, just the same way she used to. "I really do love you." Her voice was breaking. When she wrapped her arms around him and rested her head against his chest, he pushed her away.
"You're lying, Lily. You can't pull one over on me; I know you too well. Who's that man? Your husband?"
Lily looked like a child who had been caught with stolen candy. She began to cry.
"I'm sorry," she whimpered. "I'll leave him, I promise. I never loved Reggie anyway. I only married him because he asked me to, and I didn't think you were coming back, and I couldn't stand being alone anymore. I'm sorry— but I really do love you."
*Why the hell didn't that no-good sister of mine tell me she was married?* he thought. *She probably thought it would be funny to make an ass out of me.* "You said you would wait for me. You swore to me you would wait. I saved you, Lily, did you ever think of that? I covered for you to keep you out of jail, and this is how you thank me? I've had enough of you, Lily St. Regis. Don't plan on seeing me again." He turned and started to leave, but she ran after him, wailing, "No! Don't go! Don't leave me here with Reggie, please!"
"Reggie stole you," he replied coldly. "Now he can keep you, and suffer the consequences."
"You can't leave me! I'll die if you leave me here!" Lily sobbed.
Rooster looked at her with disgust. "Then you can die for all I care."
Then he walked away.
