Family

It was a warm summer afternoon, the sunlight coming through the full-length window splaying fingers onto the common room table, television, and couch. On the couch, Raven sat, stroking a green cat mindlessly, staring beyond the television at the wall. Garfield Logan's purrs were soft, and his body was warm on her legs.

The door behind them slid open with a hiss; Robin stepped through.

With a slight mewl of alarm, Garfield leapt from Raven's lap and shifted back into human, sitting on the edge of the couch, not looking at Raven.

Robin chuckled. He'd long since figured it out. He fixed himself a mug of coffee and headed right back the way he came.

Raven looked at Garfield, and beyond him, out the window; over the rocks, watching the tranquil sea beyond, the soft light washing her with warmth. She'd left her cloak and hood back in her room. And she wondered.

"Gar?" At one end of the couch, her hand stretched out towards his, failing, falling short.

"Yeah?" He wasn't looking at her. He was watching the view outside, too.

Garfield pressed into the back of the sofa, leaning on his right shoulder, facing the window.

He stared out into the foggy blue sky, the sunlight muted and longing.

"Gar?" Raven was trying again, clearly.

"Yeah?" Garfield watched the rocks. He could almost hear the wash of the tides, in and out on the rocks.

"Why do you keep saving me?"

Garfield looked up at a sudden movement. Past the window, Starfire flew, hands, arms and body locked tightly around Robin, spiralling straight up through the foggy clouds to break into the blue sky beyond. Victor was undoubtedly working on his baby downstairs, his cybernetic arm providing him with the tools he needed.

"Gar..." Raven said softly, tenderly, "Why do you keep saving me?"

Garfield turned away from the window, looking at Raven. Beside him the wistful light led dust motes through an intricate dance in the air. In front of him, he shadow stretched across the distance and enfolded her, her eyes darkening at his lack of response.

"Because I love you." Gar leaned forward and kissed her above her brow, standing up. The light beyond the window darkened, and gulls wheeled.

"But…you saved me before you even tried to make me laugh. Why?"

Gar looked away, then back at her.

"Before you thought of me romantically, why did you save me?"

Garfield looked at her, standing, and eased back onto the couch. He took her hands in his and looked at her.

"Before I even had the vestiges of loving you, why did I save you?

"Yes…why did you save me?"

"All the times I fought beside you, all the times I saved you, I loved you. But it was more than that. I'd save everyone else and die for them. Because you, Star, Robin, and Cy, are more than my friends.
It's because you're my family."

He leaned in for a kiss.

Outside the wistful sepia light darkened and blued, and gulls went home to roost, and Robin and Star landed on the roof. At night, when the Tower shone, a guardian of Jump City, the Titans talked at the dinner table, and laughed, and argued, and Gar slung an arm around Raven.

Tomorrow was another day, but as the stars came out and the moon rose to its peak, and Cy made hot chocolate and gave everyone a mug, Raven and Garfield knew –

Tonight was for family.
