The Final Sunset

Rose and I sat together and stared into the fire; it was the only thing we had to show from our game of Sgrub (or Sburb in her case). It was the only thing to show from the game which took everything from us. It took our homes, our guardians, our friends and as a result, we were trapped on the Meteor—starving to death amongst a sea of corpses.

What could we say to each other? We had both been bathed in the blood of our friends more times than either of us cared to remember. We had both been forced to endure the horrors of a game which should have been just fun. What could we say that mattered anymore?

"Rose?" I asked as my eyes slowly moved up from the fire. "Why do you think we are the only ones to survive this long?"

The Girl's eyes rose up to meet mine. Her lavender eyes were much different than the first time we met. The sarcastic, sharp-witted girl I once knew had seen things which no one should and it had changed her. It was so obvious that is showed in her eyes.

"I do not know, Kanaya," Rose mumbled as she shook her head. "But I do not concern myself with it any longer. I have asked myself that question more times than I can count, but I always come to the same conclusion. That it doesn't matter. It doesn't matter that we're the only survivors, because in the end there will be no one and then what does it matter?"

The tone in her voice meant that she truly meant the words which she had said. I wished it wasn't true, but we both knew that she was right. Rose was usually right regarding these things, but it did not make them any easier to accept. My eyes just lowered back to the fire as I tried to abjure the thoughts from my mind.

"Kanaya," she stated coldly after at least an hour of silence. "The fire is almost out and we both agreed."

The tears welled in my eyes as I looked up at her. "You are right, Rose," I whispered as I glanced back at the fire. The fire was shrinking and the embers grew sparser with each passing moment. Our final sunset was coming to a quick end.

My transparent, green tears fell against my cheeks in the darkness (which was illuminated only by the smoldering remnants of the fire). I dug into my pocket and pulled out the lipstick—the thing that wound end her life. The weapon which would be used to kill my matesprit. With a counter-clockwise twist, it transmogrified into the familiar chainsaw which I knew so well. "Rose?"

"Yes, Kanaya?" she asked as I felt her caress me in a hug with her needles in hand.

"I love you, Rose."

"I know and I love you too," Rose said as she plunged the sharp blades into my back. Tears burned my cheeks, but I pressed the tip of my own Strife Specibus against her chest and pulled the trigger to hear the familiar growl of it as it tore her flesh apart.

When she finally fell to the ground, dead—free of this hell which we had both lived in for so long. I knelt beside her with my last bit of untapped vitality and kissed her goodbye. For that was the least I could do…
