Haunt me- Chapter 1- Battered, bruised, broken
Falling, crashing, and slipping. A small gasp escaped my lips as I fell to Midgard.
I curse you, father. I hissed in my head. My legs kicked in slow motion as I realised I would undoubtedly die. A stunning blue flash pulled me out of my dreamy comatose thoughts- Heimdall. He was directing me to Midgard. I wasn't falling- I was being sent.
"Heimdall, don't send…me to Midgard…bring me home!" I screamed, struggling to speak as I soared through the air. I heard him respond to me.
"I'm sending you to Midgard, where you will meet with an old friend."
Then, I slipped unconscious. I was unaware what time it was when I emerged to the surface, but when I woke up I was lying on uncomfortable dry ground. As I opened my eyes there were two people peering at me suspiciously. One was a short red haired young woman, and the other a male holding a bow and arrow
"Tell me, where am I?" I inquired shakily as I struggled to right myself in the presence of my onlookers.
"Umm… earth and the year is 2012. Who are you?" The woman asked. She looked concerned, her eyebrows furrowed into delicate worry.
"My name… is Sigyn. And I am of Asgard." I said, straightening my back with importance.
"Not another one." The male muttered grumpily. The woman hit him sharply in the ribs- I stifled a vindictive chuckle.
"I am not the first to land here on Midgard, I was aware of that." I said, brushing my dress down.
"Okay, what the hell is Midgard?" The male spoke again, raising an eyebrow.
"You're standing on it." I replied sharply.
"Its earth you moron." The woman whispered, humour lacing her words. They were quite obviously in love with each other- yet they seemed to be in denial.
"Sigyn, my name is Natasha, and this is my… colleague, Clint." The woman said.
"I know this may be quite a lot to take in, but I have to insist that you accompany us to SHIELD HQ. Nothing personal, but you just fell out of the sky." Natasha continued, gesturing to a giant metal object behind her. It could easily fit five or six people in it.
"What is that thing?" I asked, avoiding Natasha's request.
"It's a car. We use them to travel." She explained, casting an uneasy glance at Clint. He was laughing quietly. I glared at him, and using magic made him fall flat onto his face. Losing all dignity, I guffawed with laughter- it was unladylike, but it felt so good to laugh after such a long period of misery. Natasha laughed too, relieved I wasn't too offended. Clint stood up, his mouth wide open. For the first time, I looked at my surroundings. I was in a desert of some sort- the ground was dusty, dry and unappealing. The sky was dark, and there were many stars twinkling above us. My heart twisted with sadness- the constellations were not from Asgard. My home. With a sigh, I turned back to Natasha.
"Why and where must I accompany you?" I asked.
"To the SHIELD headquarters. We have to ask you a few questions. I'm also assuming you have no accommodation, yeah?" She asked. I nodded.
"Well, we'll provide you with that. Also, there's someone who might… enjoy your company." She said secretly. Clint, who'd recovered from the incident, smiled.
"Or kill you." He rasped. Natasha led us to her car. She showed me how to secure myself in the seat. I was tentative at first; I didn't want to embarrass myself in front of these strangers. However I settled in well. It was surreal moving fast without the familiar rocky sensation of riding a horse. It made me quite ill. About half an hour later, we arrived at an incredibly large building. I climbed out of the car with less of a struggle then I had entering it. I again followed Natasha and Clint. I was surrounded by unfamiliar noises, sights and smells. We went through a glassy door, and led to a large room full of cubes with moving images contained inside of them. We were met by a tall male, with one eye.
"Director Fury, look what we picked up half an hour out." Clint said, taking off his bow and arrow and hooking it up safely. Director Fury looked at me.
"I'm Nick Fury, director of SHIELD. And who are you, Asgardian?" He said, folding his arms.
"My name is Sigyn." I curtsied, blinking delicately. "I mean no harm to your realm. I didn't even willingly come here. I was pushed." I said, wincing at how unnatural my reason for landing was.
"You were pushed?" Clint asked incredulously.
"Yes, by my father." I explained briefly, a sad smile on my lips.
"Would you care to enlighten us further?" Fury said, gesturing with his hands for me to continue.
"I am not going to refuse, but for the time being I am incredibly tired and lonely and miss my home. Is there somewhere I can sleep, even if just for tonight?" I asked, smiling hopefully. Fury smiled, understanding.
"Of course, we can discuss your misfortune at another time. Before we settle you for sleep, you said you were lonely, yes?" I nodded. "Well there is another here. He's a bit silver tongued, and slightly rude, but he could do with some conversation. You can see him if you like." Fury said, rather reluctantly.
"Silver tongued, you say?" I repeated, pondering his words. Fury began walking. I looked back to Natasha and Clint- they gestured to me to follow him. With a jolt I trotted lightly after Fury. Now matching his furious pace, we strode through several rooms of magic cubes and strangers. Finally, we descended three flights of metal stairs, through a few more rooms and finally came across a corridor. It glowed red, and seemed rather dangerous.
"I must warn you, he's been locked up for his crimes against Midgard. I will have to stay in the room with you, but I will not eavesdrop or interrupt your conversation, unless it's completely 100% crucial." He explained. With a deep breath, he walked through the corridor. At the end of it, we turned right into a vast room. There was a single large glass cage- and inside stood a lone dark figure. He stepped into the light- and I gasped aloud.
"Loki!" I cried, and walked timidly to the glass. He too walked forward to limit the space between us.
"Sigyn?" He cried, incredulous.
"Yes, it is I. What are you doing here?" I asked.
"I could ask you the same question." He laughed, his eyebrows furrowing in confusion.
"My father, the ruthless old fool that he is, pushed me off of the Bifrost- for believing in you." I explained, blushing lightly. Loki smiled. He looked no different then when I remembered- he wore the same armour, his hair was slicked back the same way as it had always, and his playful emerald eyes still sparkled, even in the dark.
"Thor brought me back using the Tesseract after I tried to rule Midgard, and Odin decided I'd be better off locked up here as a punishment for my crimes." He explained. I nodded in understanding.
"I didn't realise that I sorely missed you! We always stuck together at those ridiculous dances your mother… Frigga held." I amended, wincing internally at my mistake. If Loki had noticed, he made no sign he did.
"Yes, it's a shame you had to move to fit your father's schedule." He said sadly.
"Well, I want nothing to do with that vile man anyway." I sniffed indignantly.
"Why exactly did he push you over? What did you say?" He said, trying to make conversation.
"Well, he was discussing at a meeting he was forced to bring me along to about your attempt at ruling Midgard and how you were so foolish. I was in a foul mood anyway, and I ended up standing up, defending you and running out of the hall. I used magic to delay my father, but he caught up to me on the Bifrost and angrily pushed me over the edge. Heimdall saw me, pitied me and sent me here, to meet an 'old friend'." I said, imitating Heimdall at the end of my explanation. Loki chuckled lightly, his emerald eyes alight with curiosity. The longer I looked at him, the more I noticed he was looking unwell. There were dark circles around his eyes, and there were several bruises and cuts etched into his pale skin.
"Loki you look like you've been through Hel." I commented. He nodded, and glared at Fury.
"Well blame that oaf and his minions behind you." He snarled. I didn't turn to look at Fury- I already knew what Loki had done- this was Loki's fault. Fury cleared his throat and stepped forward.
"Sigyn, I think it best if you get some sleep for tonight. If needs be you can see Loki again tomorrow." Fury concluded. With a sigh, I stepped back from the glass, and Loki. Loki looked at me and then Fury, his gaze hardening. I followed Fury to the door, but stopped to turn around and look at Loki one last time.
"You are one truly damaged creature." I murmured, tears brewing. Then, I walked away, back into uncertainty. Fury led me back through the corridor, but we turned left after two rooms into a room similar to Loki's. Inside was another glass cage, dome shaped- it was not as strongly built, or impressive.
"You're locking me up." I said. It wasn't a question.
"No, we're keeping you safe. Loki may have found his new motivation. That man's slyer then you think."
"I know how sly he can be, we were… friends as children." I explained, stepping into the dome. Fury nodded in understanding, tapped a control pad and shut the dome.
"I could get out of here, you know." I said, just as he was leaving. He froze, mid walk, and turned to face me.
"But you're not going to leave, are you? You don't understand our technology, our customs, what we do in our spare time, our food- you don't know where you are or where you'd like to go, and you don't even have a purpose here. You need to learn. And to do so, you're gonna have to stick around." He concluded.
"I cannot argue with that, Fury." I said, lying down on the bed.
"Goodnight, Sigyn." He said, and walked out of the room, leaving me on my own to come to terms with all I had learnt. As the darkness washed over me, Loki's battered, bruised and broken face never left my mind.
