Chapter 1
Standing on the cliffs, Embry Call watched as the sun started to set over the horizon. It's been a few years since the Volturi attempted to attack the La Push pack and the Cullen family, and since then, Embry has been trying to "find himself" in one way or another.
Since the wolf pack were no longer divided, Embry has been trying to figure out who his father was. He even gotten DNA tests done from his friends Jacob, Quil, and Sam, to see if he was related to any of them, but all of the tests remained inclusive.
It was hard to digest the knowledge that his own father could be anyone, and if he were still alive, anywhere.
He didn't realize that his friends Jacob Black and Quil Ateara were waking up from behind, giving each other a knowing look.
They knew their friend has been through a lot, and they want to help him, but it takes a lot more than talking or pretending to wrestle to snap him out of his funk. Jacob sat down on Embry's right, while Quil sat on his left. "You alright, Em?"
"Guys, don't worry about me. I'm fine,"
"Embry, don't let this thing hang over you." Jacob said.
"Yeah, at least you know it could be any of us." Quil said, trying to lighten the mood. Didn't work in his favor, though.
"Look, I know you guys are trying to help, but this is something I need to do on my own terms."
"We figures you would feel this way, which is why I have this." Jacob handed him an envelope. Embry took it and opened it up. Inside was a letter addressing to Jacob about a mating ritual for a daughter of a Wolf King.
"What the hell is this?"
"There's this princess who's basically being put on display for marriage. This guy's been searching far and wide for suitable werewolves to vie for his daughter's hand in marriage...or mating...whatever. The point is, this came to me, and they did say if I already have a mate, send someone who I feel is capable of winning her heart to their kingdom or territory. Maybe this might interest you?"
Embry wasn't sure if it was a joke or not, but he laughed and said, "Well, when pigs fly, maybe."
"Who knows if this is even real anyways. For all we know, that idiot Emmett Cullen could be playing a trick on you Jake."
"Who knows and who cares, the point is, it cheered Embry up."
Quil patted him on the back, as they started to get up and head down to the bonfire on First Beach. Embry told them to go ahead, and as he watched them go toward the beach. Looking down at the letter, Embry wasn't sure what to believe, and for a moment, he thought of ripping the paper.
But then, the words started to faded on the letter. Embry blinked his eyes, unsure of what to believe, and still, the words started to fade away. Soon, an image appeared.
It was moving. Changing.
Soon, a young woman with dark curls appeared on the page, with bright green eyes looking directly at him.
"What the f***!" Embry cursed, but before he could do anything, a swirl of white light circled around him and the next thing he knew...he wasn't in La Push anymore.
Looking around him, he noticed that he wasn't in La Push anymore. He wasn't sure what was happening, and his head was spinning from the different environment, until a guy came up from behind him and bumped his shoulder, causing Embry to fall forward to the ground. "Woah, sorry man. You alright?" The guy asked, as he extended his hand for Embry to pull him back up.
Embry took it and got up, the letter was still in his hand. "I'm Gavin, what's your name?"
"Embry," he replied, as he continued to look around, trying to figure out where he was. "What is this place?"
"You seem like a new guy, aren't you?" Gavin asked, then looked down at the letter in Embry's hand. "Wait, you must be one of the suitors!"
"Suitors? For who?"
"The daughter of Alpha Lyell, who else?" Gavin replied, as he guided Embry toward the large home of the Lyell family. "Welcome to Lewa, Home of the Lyell Wolf Pack."
Embry wasn't sure what to think, and as Gavin walked him toward the backway of the mansion, Embry's head was still spinning. Was it a dream? Was his mind playing trick? Did Jacob or Quil play a joke on him? He still couldn't figure out what the answer was, and as soon as Gavin and Embry got inside, he was forced into a pair of nice pants and a white buttoned-down shirt. "Here, put these on. By the time you get in there, you want her to like you."
"Wait a minute, what the hell are you talking about?!"
"Look, you got the letter from our Alpha Lyell and his wife about this competition to win their daughter's hand, right?"
"My friend did, but this has to be a joke."
"Well, it's not, because you're here to win her heart...or at least die trying."
"Wait, what?"
"Don't mind me, besides I think you'll make it." Gavin said, then looked him over once Embry was dressed and already rolling the sleeves up his arm. "Well...maybe past the first couple of rounds."
"Wait, rounds? What the hell?"
"Look, I'll help you in the best way that I can, but the one thing I need you to do is to beat Adrian."
"Adrian? Who?"
Gavin was already pulling Embry out of the kitchen, walking into the entrance way of the mansion, where a lot of people were mingling and drinking. Embry noticed that a lot of guys and girls had markings on their bodies, some with lines similar to what you would see on a tiger, and others with a symbol on their arm or wrist. Embry didn't notice any marking on Gavin, so when Gavin went to grab two beers, Embry asked, "Hey, why don't you have a tattoo?"
"Oh, you noticed that, huh?"
"Yeah, almost everyone has a tattoo, even me. So, why don't you?"
Gavin looked around and pointed to a young woman standing next to a guy with tiger-lined tattoos all over his arms. "Do you see her?"
"Yeah?"
"You noticed that she doesn't have any tattoos on her body, right?"
"Right? What's your point?"
"Well, if you were living in a wolf pack territory, it doesn't just have to be werewolves and their mates. It could also be innocent humans as well. Felicia over there lived in this area with her family before Geoff came along. With me, my family lived here when the Lyell were in power, and we always served the Lyell's. We had the option to leave, but why would we? We're better protected here than out there."
"What do you mean by that?"
"You don't know about the war?"
"What war?"
Before Gavin could explain, there was a sound of banging drums that could be heard from one side of the room, and before he knew it, a tall, large man with a Celtic symbol on his arm, and another symbol on his chest, walked alongside a small woman who's eyes showed both kindness and anger, something you never want to see on a woman at the same time. They walked down the stairs together, with the man holding her hands in his, signifying that she's his mate and not to mess with her or he will mess with you type of vibe. Gavin leaned in an whispered, "That is Henry Lyell, the Alpha of the pack. And the one by his side, is his wife, Lana. Lana came from another wolf pack and became his wife as an alliance, or at least that's what we heard. You can hardly tell if it's arranged,"
"How?"
"Look at the way Henry is with Lana, and you tell me."
Embry looked, and noticed that Henry looked at Lana, asking her if she was alright. Maybe she wasn't feeling well, who knows? She nodded, and Henry lifted her hand to his mouth to kiss it, and she smiled at him. Soon, another man came up from behind him and whispered something, then Henry turned to Lana and said something before moving away from her.
Henry moved to the center of the room and spoke in a loud, booming voice, "Welcome to my home. Many of you have come from far and wide, and some of you are leaders, and others are not. My wife and I are pleased to have you here, as this will be a grand fight for my daughter's hand in marriage. My daughter is our only daughter, and she is precious to us, just as any other children we would have had, but she is all we have and we love her greatly. If any harm comes to our daughter, I will know of it, and I will not hesitate to not only send you away, but also sever ties with your packs, and you will be left defenseless in the ongoing war outside these wall. Have I made myself clear?"
Everyone murmured their affirmation, but Embry was still unsure of what was happening. He didn't understand how he got there, and what was happening, but soon that stopped the moment he looked up and saw her.
She stood at the top of the stairs, in a long, flowy cream-colored gown. The sleeves were flowing over her shoulders, as her long chestnut-brown hair fell in waves down her back. Her dark brown eyes glistened from the lights in the chandelier, but the moment her eyes met his...Embry felt his tug on the world was falling away from him.
It was her...she was the one who was keeping him on Earth, and no one else.
"May I present my daughter...Celina Rose Lyell, the future Alpha of the Lyell pack."
Wait, what?
Embry imprinted on the girl that he has to fight for? This doesn't look good at all, does it?
Well, Embry knew one thing, he had to win her heart...before it's too late...
