The Two of Us
The title is gay I know.
Meredith sat on the floor in her room, dressed in her white dressing gown and green sweat pants. She had a blue and red plastic stethoscope in her ears. Meredith Grey wanted to be 'just like Mummy'.
"Mr. Snuggles, we need do sur-ga-ey. Your hearts is broken."
She picked up her teddy from his shoe box bed and walked to the small and colourful desk that usually had drawings and painting and crayons covering it, but was now clean.
"Time to go sleepy-byes Mr. Snuggles."
Meredith placed picked up two eye patches to cover Mr. Snuggles' eyes. Using scissors, Meredith hacked her way through Mr. Snuggles stomach and opened his body, revealing white stuffing.
"Here's your new heart Mr. Snuggles." Meredith said as she placed a small heart shaped stress ball into his chest. She then closed his and wrapped tape around his middle.
Down stairs she heard the door open.
"Daddy!"
Thatcher hadn't been home for what seemed like years to Meredith, but in reality was the last two days. She didn't understand he wasn't coming home.
Meredith ran down the stairs and felt the plastic stethoscope fall out of her ears. She ran to the front door and saw the baby-sitter who had been in the dining room doing homework leaving.
"Daddy?"
"Daddy's not coming home Meredith, you know that." her mother commented as she walked back into the room. "Why are you dressed like that?" Ellis sighed as she pulled off her pager and walked through the house to her room.
"Mummy? Why isn't Daddy coming home?"
"Because he is busy Meredith. Leave me alone please; I've had a long day, go draw the baby-sitter something for tomorrow."
Ellis marched her way up the stairs and into her room, Meredith following slowly after her.
Once in Ellis' room Meredith made her presence known by making a small sob.
"What are you doing in here?" Snapped Ellis, as she tried to hide her own tears.
Meredith sniffed, "I want Daddy!"
"Daddy's not here."
"I want him! I want daddy! I want wr-Richard!"
"Richard?"
Meredith nodded.
"He's gone too, Meredith." Ellis said softly, "It's… It's just the two of us now."
Meredith curled up into her mother's side. Ellis looked down at the small girl that was her daughter. Only five years old. She shouldn't have to deal with this. Meredith soon fell asleep, leaving Ellis to think about her life, all the mistakes she had made. Soon she was reduced to tears. She wanted Richard; she almost called him, but stopped herself. Adele would answer. Adele knew something. She always knew something.
Ellis' silent tears then became retching sobs. Sobs that woke Meredith.
"Mummy? Mummy, why are you crying? Please don't cry Mummy, I don't like it when you cry."
"Oh Meredith. Go back to sleep."
Meredith crawled into her mothers lap and hugged her close.
"Meredith." Ellis whispered,
"Mummy."
Ellis wrapped her arms around her daughter.
"Oh Meredith. …Thank you."
"I love you Mummy."
