"Welcome to the stage Mr. Jaha!" Kane, our recruiter calls out above the group of young adults who are chatting. At the mention of our boss the group goes silent. It's almost eerie being in a crowd of over 100 high school and college students who aren't talking. It's also odd that I recognize so many people. Most of them are from my small town of Arkadia. There aren't more than a couple hundred people in my town.
They must have gotten the same letter that I received. It was in a creamy white envelope that sparkled in the light, just like a certain vampire in a movie I saw a couple years ago. Luckily, the envelope wasn't some weak monster. I slid my finger under the flap and popped it open. Inside was a letter that had aliens on it. It looked silly and I was definitely intrigued. It was my birthday so I thought it was a joke gift from my boyfriend, Finn.
When I pulled it out though I saw that it wasn't. It read:
Dear Clarke Griffin,
Congratulations! You have been accepted to the Space Station Internship. We are very excited to welcome you to such a prestigious program. We have been watching you among others looking for the perfect candidates and out of over a thousand we have chosen you. There will be 100 of you total. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to call us. We are aware that you will be starting at the University of Washington in this coming year, but please don't let that stop you from taking this opportunity.
Sincerely,
Thelonious Jaha
How did they know what school I was going to? I looked down to the bottom of the letter. There were multiple ways to contact them written below the signature. I reread the letter until I had it completely memorized before grabbing my phone. I put in the number at the bottom of the page and hit send.
"Thank you for calling Space Station. This is Anya speaking. How may I help you?" A woman said when she answered the phone.
"Hi." I froze. What was I supposed to say? Hey, I think I got a prank letter from you about some internship that I've never heard of. Is it really a prank or is this legit?
"Hello?" She said sounding a tad annoyed.
"Sorry, I am Clarke. I received a letter that had this number on it…" I said.
"Oh, you must be Clarke Griffin. I'm so glad to hear from you."
"So, this is real?"
"Yes, it is real. If you accept we will send you another envelope that will contain all of the information you will need to get here."
"What is the internship exactly?"
"That will be in the packet that you will receive tomorrow. It is confidential though so we will only send it if you accept the internship."
"So, I can't know any more about it unless I accept? What about if I change my mind afterwards?" I had a knot in my stomach. Something didn't feel right about this.
"I understand where you are coming from. I felt the same way when I received my invitation. I can tell you that this internship is worth it. All of the students who work for this internship will receive a scholarship towards their schooling. This internship is the only reason I was able to go to school."
"I see. Is it okay if I take a day to think about it?" I knew that I needed the help to pay for school. Sure, I had a scholarship to cover my tuition but there are a lot of other expenses associated with school.
"Of course, Ms. Griffin. Do you have any more questions at the moment?"
"No, thank you. I will talk to you tomorrow."
That night I had made my decision and not just because Finn had been invited too. I made my decision when I was going through some of my dad's old things. My mom didn't act like he never existed, but she wasn't exactly comfortable talking about him so when I found his old journals I hid them in my closet in a box.
As was looking through it that night, trying to glean an answer of what to do when I saw it. In one of his journals as I flipped through it something caught my eye. I flipped through again, slower this time and stopped when I saw a picture of an alien. It was a letter just like I had received. He went there too. That's when I picked up the phone, not even paying attention to the time and left a message saying yes.
"Welcome, interns! I am Thelonious Jaha. I assume you all received the letter I sent you; if not then you are in the wrong place and what a boring place to accidently end up in."
He pauses and after a millisecond of silence we let out nervous laughs.
"Yes, no one ever really laughs at that." That's when the group seems to loosen up because there are some real laughs.
"Now, I am so glad that you chose to take a chance on my company. I'm sure that none of you had heard of us before, but now that you have read your brochure…" My attention is drawn away from the man on stage.
"What brochure? You told me that the stuff wasn't important." I recognize the voice as Jasper's. I turn towards him and bite my tongue to stop a laugh as he smacks Monty.
"I told you that there wasn't anything important to tell." Monty responds and shoves Jasper back.
"Yeah, exactly."
"No, we aren't supposed to talk about it. You are supposed to read it yourself."
"Jerk."
"Whatever, man. Now can you stop whining? I want to listen so at least one of us will know what's going on." Monty glares when Jasper opens his mouth. Surprisingly Jasper closes his mouth and turns his attention back to Mr. Jaha.
I tune back into his speech. "I will be splitting you up into groups. You will be working as a team to achieve different goals that I give you. There will be people with all different skills in each group so make sure that you listen together and work together. Before we split you into your groups though we will have an introductory week. This will give us the chance to see how you work together. That way we can make changes before putting you into your final teams. Now, Anya, my assistant will come out and tell you about some of the things we have in store for you."
We clap as Mr. Jaha bows his head to us and walks off the stage. The woman from the phone walks out.
After she finishes telling us minor details that create more questions than I had before she leaves the stage. We have an hour to get settled before dinner. I see Finn over by the other side of the stadium sized field. I start to make my way to him and stop abruptly when I am no more than five feet from him. A girl with dark hair shoves past me and grabs Finn. She pulls him up against her and kisses him.
"Did the princess just lose her prince?"
I break my eyes away from the hideous scene in front of me to glare at my tormenter. "And here I was thinking that this was a prestigious internship, but apparently they'll let just about anyone in."
"Oh, Princess. That hurts."
"Bell, there you are!" Octavia, a pretty brunette girl I graduated with comes over to hug her brother, the man who I'm currently glaring at.
A/N Thank you so much for reading. I'd love to know what you think!
