Nightmares

A/N: Korra has a nightmare and Asami comes to comfort her. I don't own the Legend of Korra.

Korra breathed deeply as she took in her surroundings. She stood in a verdant meadow surrounded by vibrantly colored flowers. The dragon bird flew by and Korra smiled up at her old friend. The sky darkened and Korra whirled around. She was on her knees in the canyon again. Zaheer was suspended in the air in front of her, "The poison has done its work. The Avatar cycle will be over momentarily." Korra could see everything but she couldn't control herself. She couldn't breathe. Her lungs were collapsing as she watched Zaheer pull the air out of her. She couldn't even scream. But she was screaming. Suddenly, she was sitting bolt upright in her bed on Air Temple Island. As soon she became aware of her cries they stopped. Instead she sat gasping and taking in her true surroundings. She was safe and Zaheer was locked far away but even that couldn't calm her.

"Korra!" Asami ran into the room in her pajamas. The White Lotus was considering buying a fleet of Satomobiles and their negotiations with Asami had gone so late that Pema and Tenzin had invited her to stay the night. Korra breathed deeply still unable to speak. Asami scanned the room and when she was sure that there was no physical danger she understood and rushed to Korra's side. Asami knelt beside her and spoke softly. "Are you alright?"

"I'm fine Asami it was just a dream." Korra sat hunched over eyes staring down. She could breathe again but her voice was weak as she spoke. "It's okay you can go back to bed."

Asami sat on the bed and put her arm around Korra. "What happened?"

"Zaheer… I couldn't control my own body." As spoke she trembled and her voice broke. "I just-I just felt so helpless." Asami held Korra tighter as the other girl started to cry. "I'm sorry. I shouldn't be like this I thought I was supposed to be fine when I got rid of the poison."

Asami looked Korra in the eyes, "Korra, you don't ever need to apologize. Take all the time you need. When I lost my mother I thought I would never be happy again but I realized that life doesn't end even when you feel that all is lost. It just takes time to heal."

"That's what everyone says but it's been three years. The world needs me to be strong but the truth is I'm the worst Avatar ever." Korra started to cry.

"Korra you're not the worst Avatar ever. Every Avatar has struggled. Aang was lost for a hundred years while the world was at war but he still saved everyone." Asami gently placed her hand on Korra's cheek and looked into the Avatar's eyes. "Korra, please remember that you're more than your injuries, or your mistakes, or even being the Avatar you're Korra. I love you and I'll always be here if you need me." Asami leaned in and kissed Korra's forehead. "I'll let you get some rest."

She got up to go but Korra grabbed her wrist. "You don't have to leave." Asami laid down next to Korra and held her. When the sun rose the next day the two women were wrapped in each other's arms.
