Chapter One: The Sorting.

"And on another note," said Headmaster Dumbledore, "We have two new transfer students all the way from America. They will be with the fifth years and will be sorted after all the first years. So, without further ado, we shall start the sorting of the first years."

Riley turned her attention to her 'bestest bff forever' Mia, "Can you believe this? We're going to an actual wizard school. With British kids. In Scotland. AND THEY ARE BRITISH!"

"I can believe it," Mia shrugged.

"Well I can't!"

Mia grinned. "What house do you think you'll get in?" she asked.

Riley shrugged, "Oh, I don't know. What do you think?"

"I think you'll be a Jigglypuff."

"Mia, that's a Pokemon."

Mia smirked, "What are the actual houses then?"

"Umm I think there's Gryffindor- that's the one with Harry Potter, Ravenclaw, um… Hufflepuff, and Slytherin. Oh, wouldn't it be cool if one of us got into Gryffindor? Then we could meet the actual Boy Who Lived!"

"I don't know, Riley, I think he's pretty preoccupied with Blondie over there," Mia said, pointing at Harry Potter, who was busy staring at a boy with blonde hair across the hall.

Riley gasped, then squealed, "You don't think he's-?"

"He's a dolphin," Mia confirmed as she studied the Boy Who Lived.

"Mia," groaned Riley, "You know I don't understand your Glee references."

"A dolphin is just a gay shark."

"Mia," Riley rolled her eyes, and tried not to laugh.

The two continued talking aimlessly until it all of the first years had been sorted, and it was their turn.

"You go first," whispered Mia, shoving Riley forward.

"What?"

"I'm scared."

"Mia."

"Go."

"Fine."

Riley stepped forward and sat on the stool. The large floppy hat was placed on her head.

Well, said a voice inside of her head. She assumed it was the hat, Let's see. You're smart, and would do well in Ravenclaw, yes, and the fact that you're a black belt definitely gives you a chance in Gryffindor. However, your charming personality and friendly aura leads me to believe you would do best in HUFFLEPUFF!

The last part was cried out and echoed throughout the Great Hall. Riley grinned as she felt the weight of the hat lifted off her head. She sat in one of the last seats at the Hufflepuff, surrounded by first years, and watched with interest as her best friend got sorted.

Mia shifted nervously as the hat was placed on her head. Let's see, said a voice inside her head. She hoped it was the hat, and she wasn't going crazy. You're not going crazy. Now, let me concentrate. Well, Gryffindor and Ravenclaw are definitely out of the picture. Oh, hush, you made your best friend go first because you were too scared, and your Latin grades are nothing to be proud of. You're friendly enough, however, I think you would do best in SLYTHERIN.

Like it had with Riley, the last part had been shouted and echoed through the Great Hall. Mia went over to the Slytherin table and sat down amongst the first years.

Riley waved to Mia from across the hall in hopes of getting Mia to come over. Mia, instead, gave Riley a glare that said 'you should be paying attention'. Riley stuck her tongue out and then made shooting actions at Mia with her fingers. Mia grinned and rolled her eyes, then looked back to Dumbledore to hear the last of his speech.

"And finally," Dumbledore was saying, "A few words of wisdom to start the year. Fish stick, ontamontipia, microwave."

Dinner was drawn to an end, and Riley and Mia were whisked away by the prefects of their house, Riley going towards the kitchens, Mia going towards the dungeon.

Mia walked back to the Slytherin common room, following the prefects as they guided the way down to the dungeons.

"Ambrosia," said the female prefect when they had reached a set of large oak doors. The doors swung open.

"Don't forget the password," said the male prefect, "Otherwise you'll be left out here to rot."

They led the way into the common room and Mia had to stop and stare just to take it all in.

The Slytherin common room was dark and had black leather couches and green decor. Tapestries were strung across the room showing all of the old Head of the House, the Slytherin symbol, and the Hogwarts symbol. There were large circular tables off to one side where Mia suspected they could do homework, or play wizard chess. There was also a large fireplace, with a portrait of Salazar Slytherin over top of it, and snake skulls on the mantle. Mia shuddered. She hated snakes with a passion, and wasn't it her luck that she got sorted into Slytherin, the house of snakes.

If only Riley was here, she thought, She actually likes snakes.

"Haberdasher," sneered a girl with brown hair and a rather round face, "You're rooming with Daphne, Pansy, and I. I'm Millicent."

Mia smirked. Daphne? Pansy? Millicent? Was she the only one with a normal name? "Right then," she said, "Lead the way, Millie."

Millie rolled her eyes and stalked off down one of the long hallways. Mia followed her and soon they had stopped in front of one of the brown doors. The names Bulstrode, Greengrass, Haberdasher, and Parkinson were displayed on a plaque next to the door.

The inside of the room had four beds neatly lined against the wall. The beds were four poster beds, with green curtains, green bedding, and silver sheets. In front of each bed was a trunk labeled with their last name. Mia was pleased to find that her bed was by the window. Next to each bed was a small night stand. Each night stand had a small green and silver lamp on it.

Along with the beds, night stands, and trunks, there were also four small desks, complete with a wooden chair, an ink pot, and a quill. There was a door between the two middle beds that led to a large bathroom that had four sinks, four shower stalls, and two toilets that were shut off behind doors. Mia was especially pleased to learn that she wouldn't have to share a sink or shower with any of the other girls.

After sifting through her trunk and making sure that her knitting was in order, she found her pajamas, an old t-shirt and pajama pants that had polar bears on them. She began to strip.

"Not shy, are you?" remarked Pansy from the bed next to hers.

"I was a swimmer, you get used to stripping. There were times when I was in a locker room surrounded by wet, naked women every night."

Daphne flinched while Pansy grinned. "Are you a lesbian then?" asked Millie.

Mia just smiled and winked as she undid her bra and pulled her t-shirt over head. The other three girls just stared at her. Millie and Pansy had a humorous look to their face, while Daphne just glowered uncomfortably.

Mia sighed, "I'm not a lesbian." Daphne relaxed. Millie and Pansy looked mildly put off. "But I'm not exactly all that straight either," Mia smiled when Daphne became visibly uncomfortable again, "But don't worry, I'm not looking for anyone." She continued to sift through her trunk and pulled out all of her bathroom things.

"I'll be taking the sink and shower on the far right," she announced. The other girls just nodded, so she went into the bathroom and placed her shampoo in her claimed shower, and then went back to the sink to brush her teeth.

After brushing thoroughly, she popped in her retainer and clenched her teeth, trying to ignore the pain. It had been several days since she had last wore her retainer. Yes, while she knew that there were spells to keep her teeth straight, she preferred using her retainer. Spells performed on the mouth tended to mess up, or fade after a couple of hours.

She went back to her trunk and began to take out anything that wasn't clothing. Her knitting found a home underneath her side table; her bookbag found a place next to her desk; all of her spare parchment, spare quills, and a few pens and pencils she had smuggled in were arranged neatly in the desk drawer. Her text books were placed on top of her desk. Other books that she had brought for light reading, such as her favorite To Kill a Mockingbird, were kept underneath all of her clothes (which she kept neatly folded in her trunk). She pulled out her phone and turned it on. She wasn't surprised when she saw that she had no bars or wifi. It was still placed on her nightstand alongside her ear buds, laptop (that had a never ending battery), and other miscellaneous items.

After placing all three pairs of her shoes under the side of her bed, Mia looked over at her bed. On top of her bed was a long green scarf with thing silver stripes and two green and silver striped ties. She placed them in her trunk, then looked back at the bed. She frowned when she saw the silver sheets and green bedding. She took out her wand, nine and a half inches, ash wood, with the core of a unicorn hair, and transfigured the dark green comforter into a white one that had gray elephants on it. She also transfigured the sheets and pillowcases into a deep green. She even pulled out her Gonzo and Kermit the Frog plushies and placed them on her bed, along with a small flower shaped pillow that she couldn't sleep without. And just to show how much of a team player she was, she even turned the blue and yellow flower pillow into a green and gray one.

That's better, she thought, Just like home. Well, sort of.

Sighing, she pushed her short light brown hair out of her face and connected her phone to her wand to charge, setting the alarm on it for seven a.m. That way, she would have an hour to get ready for breakfast.

"You know they're not going to like that," said Pansy as she looked at Mia's bed.

"What?"

"Your bedding. And those muggle devices. Oh, and you brought stuffed animals? How… sweet."

"You're just jealous because I'm man enough to sleep with my stuffed animals. Besides, they hold sentimental value."

Pansy rolled her eyes, "Don't tell me you're one of those fangirls."

"Alright, I won't. Now, muggle devices I understand, and they're just going to have to deal with it. I can't get a signal anyway. So back to my bedding. What won't they like about it?"

"Well for starters, there are elephants on your blanket."

"I like elephants."

"Well you could at least have a blanket with snakes on it instead of the elephants."

"No."

"Why not?"

"I don't like snakes."

Pansy tilted her head. "You're in Slytherin and you don't like snakes?"

"They're intimidating. I like lovable animals. Like elephants."

Pansy rolled her eyes, "Whatever."

Mia sighed and decided that it was time for her to go to sleep. After turning off her lamp, she climbed into bed and undid the bindings that held back the curtains that were on her four poster bed. They fell shut, however, it wasn't completely dark. There was a small ball of light that floated above her pillow.

This will be useful, she mused, if I want to stay up late reading.

The small light went out when she whispered, "Nox," and she was encased in a world of darkness. Snuggling under the covers, she clutched her Kermit and Gonzo in her arms and drifted off into a deep slumber.

Riley followed the Hufflepuff prefects down the steps to the kitchens, then passed the kitchens, and they continued down the hall. I wonder if students can use the kitchens, Riley thought to herself as she passed them, then Mia and I can make mac and cheese and chocolate waffles.

The prefects and others passed a painting and stopped. "Tor-tor-tortellini," said one of the male prefects. Barrels rolled away and the bricks moved aside. "Now remember," he continued on to say, "If you forget the password we might not know your out here and you will have to wait in the kitchens." We all piled inside.

This must be the common room, Riley thought to herself as she looked around. What she saw was a cozy, circular room painted a warm golden yellow, with a bright fire burning in the fireplace. Around the room there were plush yellow and black chairs and bean bags sitting on top of a plush cream carpet. Off to one corner were large oak tables with well built chairs surrounding them.

Oh how thoughtful, someone put cushions on the chairs so our butts won't hurt when we do our homework, she thought as she examined the yellow and black striped cushions. The crackle-pop sound from the fire made her look back up again. On the walls were paintings and brilliant tapestries of the house founder and different accomplishments.

"Riley? Riley Silverstein?" said a fellow Hufflepuff girl. She was tall (a/n Riley is like 4'11 so everyone is considered tall) with short dark brown almost black hair and dark rimmed glasses

"Yes?" Riley answered.

"Hello, my name is Lydia Collins and I will be rooming with you. Usually there are four people in a room, but there are an odd number of girls so it will just be the two of us. But that means we can have sleepovers with friends from another house," she went on to explain.

"Cool." Riley and Lydia walked back deeper into the Hufflepuff house to reach the dormitories. They came up to a round, golden door, like the top of a barrel, with a simple handle in the middle.

"OH MY GOSH it looks like hobbit hole!" Riley squealed.

"YOU'VE READ THE HOBBIT?!" Lydia squealed in delight.

"Well duh!"

"Wait are you a muggleborn?" Lydia asked.

"Yeah," Riley answered.

"I am too!" They both squealed in delight and did this kind of nerd happy dance.

"You need to meet my best bff, Mia. You would love her!" Riley told Lydia as they entered into the dorm.

"YES OH MY GOSH lets talk after we unpack," said Lydia. Riley took her first real good look around the room. The walls were a golden yellow just like the common room and the plush carpet also continued into the dorm. There were four beds as to be expected but only two beds had trunks at the foot. The beds were large and comfy looking with pale yellow duvets and cream colored under sheets. The pillows were also a pale pastel yellow.

At the foot of each bed was trunk; the bed nearest to the wall had the trunk labeled Silverstein while the other one was labeled Collins. Each bed had a desk next to it with some paper, a quill, and a small bottle of ink.

On her desk Riley saw that someone, probably Dumbledore she guessed, set up the terrarium so her albino corn snake so it would have regulated heat and humidity.

"Hey, Lydia?" Riley called.

"What?" came her voice from the bathroom.

"Do you have any problem with snakes? Dumbledore gave me special permission to keep mine and her terrarium is on my desk."

"That's cool. I have no problem at all."

Riley smiled to herself as she saw that her snake was under the fake branch buried under wood shavings. She went to the foot of her bed and opened her trunk. She hummed to herself as she grab the arm full of stuff animals and placed them on her bed. She then grabbed her Pokemon blanket and draped it in one smooth motion on her bed.

Lydia came out of the bathroom with her pajamas on and her teeth brushed. She also started to unpack her trunk.

Meanwhile Riley pulled out her Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Hobbit, and a veterinary book and set it in the corner of her desk above her text books. Then she set her computer in its case under her desk for the time being and found her soft blue pajama pants with bears and an old comfy nightshirt and her toothbrush. While she is getting ready for bed in the bathroom she puts her toothbrush on the second sink and all of her shampoo and such in the second shower.

"Hey, I call the second shower and sink. That alright?"

"Fine with me," replied Lydia.

Riley walked out of the bathroom and sat on her bed. She set her phones alarm for 6:15 so she could take her shower in the morning. She noticed that there were no bars or wifi.

"Darn, I was going to go on tumblr but there is no wifi."

"Yeah, that sucks. Whenever I go back home though I absorb as much of the internet as possible," replied Lydia.

"Well I will talk to you in the morning," Riley said in between yawns, "Oh, and my alarm is going to go off early so just ignore it."

The room got dark but there was a little ball of light above her pillow. I wonder if Mia has these in her house too. "Nox," Riley said. She soon drifted to sleep in comforting darkness.
