I can feel my strength slipping away. I must hold on until he returns with the night.

"He cannot die. Not him!" My mind was racing, but all I could hear was my darling son's fever dreams. "YOU MUST NOT DIE!" He stirred restlessly, but did not open his eyes.

The pale, young doctor approached my bedside. His cool fingers felt my forehead It felt so refreshing after the endless heat of my fever.

It gave me enough strength to speak. "SAVE HIM!.

He took my hand. "I will do everything in my power."

I fixed him with a desperate stare, "You must. You must do everything in your power. What others cannot do, that is what you must do for my Edward."

I sensed his confusion and hesitation. Imploring him with my eyes, I could tell he was considering granting my request.

I fell back limply on my pillow and my thoughts turned to my angel. "Edward, you will survive. Dr Cullen will take care of you. He will be your father. Listen to his advice. Remember me. I love you" I sensed confusion from the pale young doctor holding my hand, but my only focus was my son. Edward moaned slightly, and turned his head towards me. His thoughts were incoherent. Had he heard? Was it too late? I fought to hang on until I was sure, but the darkness overwhelmed me.

Carlisle gazed down at the bronze haired woman's body. How had she known about his "ability" to keep Edward from dying? He wished that she had been able to speak to her son before dying, but her last words had been for him. Even in death, she did not look at peace. He looked over at Edward. Would he regret not being able to say goodbye to his mother? He sighed. He hated the waste of human life this epidemic had caused, but he felt a stirring of excitement at the thought of having a companion. Turning to the other stretcher, he lifted Edward easily in his arms and headed for home.
